Suryakumar Yadav Cleared for Duleep Trophy Final Round

Suryakumar Yadav Cleared for Duleep Trophy Final Round

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, has been cleared to play in the final round of the 2024-25 Duleep Trophy, beginning on Thursday in Anantapur. He will replace Sarfaraz Khan in the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led India B team, which will face the Shreyas Iyer-led India D.

Yadav had been withdrawn from the squad prior to the first round as a precautionary measure to nurse a thumb injury. He had complained of discomfort while gripping the bat after sustaining a blow on his right thumb while fielding at the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational in Coimbatore.

Yadav, who hasn’t featured in any form of first-class cricket since last year’s Duleep Trophy, has expressed a desire to compete for a spot in India’s Test team. “There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again,” he said last month.

Going forward, Yadav is likely to be in action next during the home T20Is against Bangladesh in October, which could mean his unavailability for at least the first round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season that’s set to kick off on October 11.

India B, who opened the tournament with a thumping win over India A, are currently second in the four-team table. An outright win in their final game will give them a good chance of clinching the title.

Duleep Trophy Final Round Resumes, Iyer and Samson Aim to Impress

Duleep Trophy Final Round Resumes, Iyer and Samson Aim to Impress

The Duleep Trophy, India’s premier domestic red-ball tournament, is set to resume its final round on Thursday, September 19, 2024, providing another opportunity for aspiring cricketers to showcase their skills. Unlike previous editions, this year’s tournament will not feature any knockout games, with the team accumulating the highest points crowned as champions.

Currently, India C, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, sits atop the standings with nine points from two matches. They will face Mayank Agarwal’s India A, while Abhimanyu Easwaran’s India B will take on India D, captained by Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer, who was overlooked for the recent Bangladesh series, will be eager to prove his worth. However, his team has yet to earn a point in the tournament, putting pressure on him to deliver an inspiring performance.

The performance of India D batter Sanju Samson and pacer Arshdeep Singh will also be closely monitored by the selectors. In the India B camp, Rinku Singh will aim to make a significant contribution after a disappointing outing in the previous game.

The India A versus India C contest will see the selectors expecting more runs from Agarwal, Riyan Parag, and Sai Sudharsan. Parag has shown promise with the bat but needs to spend more time in the middle.

Pacer Prasidh Krishna, returning from injury, will be looking to bowl a substantial number of overs, while Shams Mulani will hope to repeat his match-winning effort in the prevailing conditions. Ishan Kishan, who made a memorable return to red-ball cricket with a century for India C, will need another impressive knock to garner further attention from the selectors.

Shreyas Iyer's Test Hopes Fade After Duleep Trophy Disappointment

Shreyas Iyer’s Test Hopes Fade After Duleep Trophy Disappointment

India’s star batsman Shreyas Iyer faces an uphill battle to regain his spot in the Test cricket team. Despite a chance for a comeback in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, Iyer’s disappointing performance has further diminished his prospects.

Iyer’s struggles in the Duleep Trophy, where he managed only 104 runs in four innings, have raised concerns among BCCI officials. His shot selection has been particularly criticized, with one official expressing doubts about his place in the current Test team.

“At the moment, there’s no room for Shreyas to be in the Test team. Who will he replace? Besides, his shot selection has been a concern in Duleep, especially yesterday (Sunday),” the official told Telegraph.

The rise of young talents like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, who impressed during the series against England earlier this year, has pushed Iyer down the pecking order. Another board official hinted that Iyer will continue playing in the domestic circuit and suggested his inclusion in the five-match Test tour of Australia later this year is unlikely.

However, the official also mentioned the possibility of Iyer participating in the Irani Cup and the Bangladesh T20I series, depending on his performance and availability. The official emphasized the need for Iyer to regain form while acknowledging his past achievements, particularly his batting during last year’s ODI World Cup.

“Now, if he doesn’t fire in Irani too, he still has the Ranji Trophy to get runs. It wasn’t too many days ago when he was batting so well in last year’s ODI World Cup. He suffered an injury too, which needs to be considered. Also, with still one round left in Duleep, you never know he might score a hundred. He needs to regain form. Most likely he won’t go to Australia for his problems against the short ball, but one can’t just ignore his runs at home,” the official added.

Iyer’s absence from the Test team is a significant setback for India, as he has been a key member of the side in recent years. His ability to play spin and score runs quickly has made him a valuable asset in the middle order. However, his recent form has raised questions about his ability to perform at the highest level.

Tamil Nadu's Jagadeesan Makes Duleep Trophy Debut, Overcomes Nerves

Tamil Nadu’s Jagadeesan Makes Duleep Trophy Debut, Overcomes Nerves

Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman N. Jagadeesan made his Duleep Trophy debut for India-B in the second-round match against India-C at the Rural Development Trust (RDT) Stadium B-ground in Anantapur. It was his first-ever first-class match outside the Ranji Trophy.

Jagadeesan, who was part of the South Zone squad that won the title last season, had not played in the first round of the ongoing edition. He expressed his excitement about making his debut, saying, “I was very elated about it because you always wanted to be a part of a Duleep Trophy side.”

Despite feeling nervous initially, Jagadeesan overcame his debut jitters and played his natural game. “I was feeling a bit nervous in the beginning, but the moment I got to know nine wickets had fallen (for India-C) and probably I’d be batting soon, I think I was just focused a lot more on my batting,” he said.

Jagadeesan looked set to score his maiden Duleep Trophy century, but he was caught behind off Anshul Kamboj on 70 (137b, 8×4). While he was disappointed, he took away the positive of overcoming his debut nerves.

Jagadeesan also highlighted a unique feature of the ongoing Duleep Trophy edition: “We have seen a lot of Duleep Trophies, and I think this Duleep Trophy has seen a lot of international players playing the games. Playing with them in close quarters, you get to learn a lot.”

The Duleep Trophy is a prestigious first-class cricket tournament in India, and Jagadeesan’s debut marks a significant milestone in his career. He will be hoping to continue his good form and help India-B progress in the tournament.

Medium-Pacer Anshul Kamboj Shines in Duleep Trophy with Eight-Wicket Haul

Medium-Pacer Anshul Kamboj Shines in Duleep Trophy with Eight-Wicket Haul

Medium-pacer Anshul Kamboj’s impressive performance in the Duleep Trophy has earned him praise and recognition. The 23-year-old was initially surprised by his selection but seized the opportunity to showcase his skills.

In the second-round match against India-B, Kamboj’s eight-wicket haul for 69 runs played a pivotal role in securing a significant first-innings lead for India-C. His maiden First Class five-wicket haul came on a batting-friendly wicket, highlighting his ability to adapt and excel in challenging conditions.

Kamboj’s bowling effort was particularly impressive considering the absence of pace spearhead Sandeep Warrier due to a hamstring injury. He and Vijaykumar Vyshak had to shoulder the extra workload, which they did with aplomb.

Despite having played only 13 First Class matches prior to the tournament, Kamboj displayed maturity and composure. He explained his strategy of bowling in front of the batters to increase the chances of lbw and bowled dismissals.

Among his wickets, Kamboj was particularly proud of dismissing Sarfaraz Khan, a renowned batsman in the domestic circuit. He credited his success to bowling in the right areas and maintaining consistency.

India-B skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran, who carried his bat with an unbeaten 157, expressed satisfaction with his ability to bat for an extended period after recovering from a hamstring injury. He emphasized the importance of spending time in the middle and gaining confidence for future matches.

Kamboj’s performance has not only earned him the Player-of-the-Match award but also raised hopes for his future prospects. His ability to perform under pressure and adapt to different conditions bodes well for his career.

Ishan Kishan's Duleep Trophy Century Sparks India Return Speculation

Ishan Kishan’s Duleep Trophy Century Sparks India Return Speculation

Indian wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan made a triumphant return to the cricket field, smashing a century in his red-ball comeback in the Duleep Trophy. Playing for India C, Kishan scored 111 runs off 126 balls, showcasing his exceptional strokeplay and intent.

Kishan’s knock has sparked chatter about his potential return to the Indian national team, especially since he is not part of the squad for the first Test against Bangladesh. His social media post, captioned “Unfinished Business,” has further intensified speculation.

Kishan’s last appearance for India was during the tour of South Africa last year. Since then, he has been absent from the national team due to mental fatigue and a groin injury. Despite playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024 campaign, his absence from Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy campaign hindered his comeback plans.

In the Duleep Trophy match against India B, Kishan was a late inclusion into the India C side. He missed the first-round game for India D due to a groin injury but made a dominant return. He shared a 189-run stand for the third wicket with Baba Indrajith, who made 78 off 136 balls.

Kishan’s century was laced with 14 fours and three sixes, highlighting his aggressive approach. His innings has caught the attention of selectors and fans alike, raising hopes for his return to the Indian team.

The India B vs India C match ended in a draw, but Kishan’s performance has left an indelible mark. His determination and skill have reignited the belief that he can be a valuable asset to the Indian national team.

Shams Mulani's All-Round Brilliance Powers India A to Duleep Trophy Victory

Shams Mulani’s All-Round Brilliance Powers India A to Duleep Trophy Victory

Mumbai all-rounder Shams Mulani has had a first-class match of his life in the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round. After scoring a match-saving 89 in the first innings for India A against India D, Mulani now starred with the ball and with his quick thinking in the field.

Not only did he pick up four wickets in the game, the 27-year-old was able to inflict a rare type of run out. Yash Dubey, opening the batting for India D, was the victim of a stroke of misfortune and a brilliant piece of game alertness by Mulani.

Striker Ricky Bhui had played a ball bowled by Mulani down the ground, but the ball happened to deflect off non-striker Dubey’s bat. However, Dubey, thinking that the ball had slipped through, attempted to sneak a quick single.

However, an alert Mulani noticed that the ball hadn’t gone too far, and grabbed it and dislodged the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Dubey was late to react, and had to walk back to the pavilion. He was dismissed on a score of 37 off 94 balls.

India A registered a thumping 186-run victory, despite struggling at 94/5 in their first innings. Mulani’s resilient 89 had helped India A to go from there to a total of 290, after which they took a 107-run lead as India D were bowled out for just 183.

Notably, India D captain Shreyas Iyer made a duck, after walking out to bat wearing sunglasses.

In the second innings, centuries by Pratham Singh and Tilak Verma helped India A set a mammoth target of 487. India D were bowled out for 301, with Mulani dismantling the middle order by taking the wickets of Devdutt Padikkal, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, along with his moment of genius by running out Dubey.

Mulani’s all-round performance has been a key factor in India A’s victory in the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable asset to the team.

India A Triumphs Over India D in Duleep Trophy Clash

India A Triumphs Over India D in Duleep Trophy Clash

India A emerged victorious in their Duleep Trophy clash against India D, securing a commanding 186-run win. After suffering a setback in their opening match, India A bounced back with a dominant performance, setting a formidable target of 488 for their opponents.

India D’s pursuit of a draw began promisingly, with opener Abhimanyu Easwaran and Yash Dubey forging a solid partnership. However, the dismissal of Dubey and Devdutt Padikkal in quick succession halted their momentum.

Despite a valiant effort from captain Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, India D’s batting lineup struggled to withstand the relentless bowling attack of India A. Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian proved to be the tormentors-in-chief, sharing seven wickets between them.

Mulani, who had earlier contributed a crucial 89 in India A’s first innings, claimed four wickets in the match, including the prized scalp of Iyer. Kotian, the Mumbai all-rounder, wreaked havoc in the lower order, picking up a four-wicket haul to seal the victory in the final session.

India A’s batting prowess was on full display in their first innings, with Pratham Singh and Tilak Varma amassing centuries. Their contributions laid the foundation for a commanding total of 380 for 3, which ultimately proved insurmountable for India D.

With this victory, India A remains in contention to finish atop the table heading into the final round of the Duleep Trophy. Their performance serves as a testament to their depth and resilience, as they look to secure a berth in the championship match.

India C and India B Draw in Duleep Trophy Fixture

India C and India B Draw in Duleep Trophy Fixture

India C and India B played out a tame draw in their second Duleep Trophy 2024-25 fixture in Anantapur. Haryana seamer Anshul Kamboj’s career-best haul of 8 for 69 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s second half-century of the match were the major highlights on the dull fourth day.

Resuming on 309 for 7, India B were bowled out for 332 with Kamboj picking up all three wickets to fall. Abhimanyu Easwaran, the India B captain, carried his bat through and was unbeaten on 157 as his side conceded a 193-run lead early on the final day.

India C, however, decided to settle for the first-innings honours and were at 128 for 4 after 37 overs when both captains decided to shake hands. Kamboj’s performance was among his most impactful yet in a nascent first-class career. Coming into his 15th game, Kamboj hadn’t taken more than three wickets in a single innings previously. His eight-for in Anantapur brought him the second-best figures by a fast bowler in Duleep Trophy history, behind Debasis Mohanty (10 for 46).

India C lost B Sai Sudharsan early when Mukesh Kumar had him bowled for 11. Gaikwad and Rajat Patidar put on 96 for the second wicket, Patidar hitting 42 to go with his first innings 40, before falling to Musheer Khan’s left-arm spin. Rahul Chahar, the legspinner, then had first-innings centurion Ishan Kishan for 1, followed by Gaikwad’s scalp in his very next over.

The only blip for India C in this game was a leg injury to pacer Sandeep Warrier, which led to him hobbling off after just 1.1 overs. Manav Suthar, who picked up a match-winning seven-for in the first round of matches, went wicketless in this game. His figures read: 33-4-85-0. Musheer, the player of the match last week for his 181, managed just 1 while Sarfaraz Khan, asked to play in this fixture before linking up with the Indian Test squad in Chennai, managed 16.

Sanju Samson's Heroics Keep India D in Duleep Trophy Chase

Sanju Samson’s Heroics Keep India D in Duleep Trophy Chase

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson’s scintillating knock of 40 off 45 kept India D in the hunt for an improbable victory against India A in the second round match of the Duleep Trophy.

Chasing a mammoth 488, India D were reeling at 62/1 on Day 4 when Samson stepped up to the plate. He began his innings with a boundary off Tanush Kotian and quickly shifted gears, smashing a six against Shams Mulani.

Samson’s aggressive approach continued as he hit another boundary and a maximum in the 57th over of Kotian. However, his innings was cut short in the 61st over when Kotian dismissed him for 40.

Despite Samson’s departure, Ricky Bhui remained solid at the crease, scoring a century to keep India D’s hopes alive. Earlier, Tilak Varma and Pratham Singh had made smooth hundreds to drive India A to a commanding position.

Varma remained unbeaten on 111, while Pratham made an impressive 122 as India A declared their second innings closed at 380 for three. This gave them an overall lead of 487, and India D had to chase down 488 for victory.

With Samson’s heroics and Bhui’s century, India D managed to reduce the deficit to 426 runs at the end of Day 4. The match remains evenly poised, with India D needing a further 284 runs to win on the final day.
