Manchester United wins Carabao Cup; win a trophy after 6 long years

The new era has begun. Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United has finally landed its hands on a trophy after six long years. The Red Devils defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United started the match with some excellent gameplay. The team relentlessly attacked to put Newcastle United on the back foot. Soon after, Casemiro scored the opener for Erik ten Hag’s side at Wembley to give them the lead.

The club widened their lead as a Marcus Rashford shot was deflected by Sven Botman in his own goal to make matters worse for the Magpies.

With this win, the Premier League club won its first piece of silverware since they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

Erik Ten Hag, who has been brilliant at the club, said in the post-match interview, “Yet again this evening, they had the right spirit. It’s a very good spirit, they act as a team and fight, give everything.” He further added, “It was not always the best football, but it was effective. Firstly, you have to win the first one [trophy]. We will get a lot of inspiration from this, but also more confidence that we can do it.”

Manchester United, under Erik Ten Hag, is playing exceptionally and is on the lookout to win more trophies. The club is in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League and still has an outside shot of winning the Premier League.

Man United knocks Barcelona out of the Europa League

Manchester United did the unthinkable. The Red Devils have knocked Barcelona out of the Europa League. After the first leg ended in a 2-2 draw, the Premier League club came from behind to score two goals to take the side to the next round of the Europa League.

Both sides played aggressively in the early minutes of play to get one in the opposition’s net. And maybe this approach cost them a penalty in the 18th minute after Bruno Fernandes performed a rash challenge on Alejandro Balde. Robert Lewandowski, who was as cool as a cucumber, converted the penalty into a goal and gave the Blaugrana the lead.

But Fred equalized early in the second half before substitute Antony completed the turnaround for Manchester United 17 minutes from full time.

Erik Ten Hag called this one of the best wins of his managerial career. In a post-match interview, he said, “It was a magnificent night. I think it is brilliant when you can beat Barcelona – eight points ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga – and we have seen this week Real Madrid playing [in their 5-2 win [over Liverpool]. We did a magnificent performance.”

The victory marks Manchester United’s first win over Barcelona since the narrow 1-0 win in the Champions League semi-final second leg in April 2008.

His all-time Premier League record stands at 528 wins from 810 matches. He is the most successful manager in British football history, winning 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United.

Manchester United fans will be extremely happy with this news and hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson might have given a secret tip or two to the current United manager.

Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS enters the bidding process for Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS, a pharmaceutical firm, has formally entered into the sales process of Premier League club Manchester United. Jim Ratcliffe’s spokesperson confirmed the news and said, “I can confirm that we have formally put ourselves into the process.”

In November, United’s US owners, the Glazer family, said they had begun looking at options for the 20-time English champion, including new investment or a potential club sale. The English club is currently valued at $4.6 billion.

The Glazer family has owned Manchester United since 2005 when late patriarch Malcolm Glazer completed a highly controversial buyout that plunged the club into debt for the first time in more than 70 years.  Their business model saw significant funds taken out of the club as dividends. Despite the losses, no dividends were paid in December 2022 for the first time in six years.

This is not the only time Manchester United has been linked with a new owner. Earlier, India’s billionaire Mukesh Ambani was also reported to be having a significant interest in buying the English club from the Glazers family.

The Old Trafford-located club is currently fourth on the Premier League table with 38 points from 18 games. The club next faces table toppers Arsenal on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

Saudi club Al-Nassr finally signs Ronaldo on a free transfer

After much speculation, Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has finally confirmed his next destination. The former Manchester United star has been signed by Saudi club Al- Nassr on a two-year deal worth over €200 million. The contract will see CR7 play in the Saudi Pro League till 2025.

Al-Nassr announced the signing via Twitter. The club tweeted, ” History in the making. This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves. Welcome @Cristiano to your new home @AlNassrFC.”

After the announcement was made public, Cristiano was quoted as saying, “I can’t wait to discover a new football league in a different country.” He further added, “The vision with which Al Nassr operates is very inspiring, and I am delighted to join my teammates so that together we can help the team achieve greater success.”

Ronaldo heads to the Gulf after a year that saw him relegated to the bench for Portugal and cut adrift by Manchester United. The club parted ways with the Portuguese star after the veteran forward gave an explosive TV interview in which he said he felt “betrayed” by the club and had no respect for coach Erik ten Hag.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s move is being criticised by a lot of his fans. In a time when his long-time competitor Lionel Messi is scaling new heights, Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr is seen as an end to his numero uno status.

Cody Gakpo signs for Liverpool

Liverpool beat Man United to get Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven

In a dramatic turn of events, Liverpool has signed Netherlands winger Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. The player, a key target for Manchester United, has been signed for a record transfer fee.

As per ESPN, the fee of the deal is around £37 million plus add-ons, up to £50m potential package. The sides are close to finalising his arrival in the January transfer window. PSV did not disclose the deal’s value, but general manager Marcel Brands said it would be a “record transfer” for the club.

The Dutch club said in a statement: “PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the transfer completion.”

The signing will be great for Liverpool since Luis Diaz is facing a severe injury after aggravating a knee injury during a midseason training break in Dubai. Also, their star signing, Darwin Nunez, is going through a rough patch.

Cody Gakpo has been a key player for PSV Eindhoven. The star has scored 36 goals in just 106 appearances for the Dutch club. Also, the winger impressed during the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring 3 goals in 5 games.

Liverpool has had a torrid time, with the team currently in 6th position in the English Premier League. With the latest acquisition, the team might see a great improvement in performance.

Man United advance to quarterfinals of EFL Cup after thrashing Burnley

Club football is back!! After a satisfying end to the World Cup, club football in England is back. Man United and Burnley locked horns in EFL Cup yesterday, with the English club thrashing Burnley to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The match began with Eriksen getting on the scoresheet in the 27th minute before Rashford doubled the advantage in the second half of United’s first game since the World Cup. Man United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, praised Marcus Rashford for his incredible performance. He said, “I think he’s on a very good level. His performances are improving a lot, I would say, from game to game. He’s a continued threat today but also many other games in this season, he’s scored already a lot of goals. Ten Hag challenges Maguire to replicate England form with Man Utd

Erik ten Hag calls for Maguire to replicate his World Cup form for Man Utd

Manchester United’s manager Erik ten Hag has urged Harry Maguire to replicate his World Cup form when he returns to play club football with Manchester United.

Maguire made just three Premier League starts for Manchester United this season before going to the World Cup with England and appearing in all five games in their run to the quarter-finals.

After England’s elimination to France on Saturday, ten Hag hopes Maguire can return to Old Trafford with confidence from his impressive showings in Qatar. “I can only back him. I’ve been asked many times if he is good enough [to play for me], and it is clear he is good enough to play at the highest level,” the United manager told reporters.

“When he is playing with his confidence like now, he is a massively important player for us, and that is what everyone expects. That’s what Harry expects from himself. He has that high standard; he wants to play at the highest level, and he wants to lead the defensive line, so it is up to him. I’m sure he has the potential to play in our style and fit into our system,” the manager added.

Erik ten Hag further said, “When he is working hard, you will get that confidence, and you are seeing that with the way he is playing for England. We want him to bring that back to Manchester with him so he can bring it on the pitch for Manchester United. I expect from him; the team knows what they expect from him. If he does that, he will be a great player for us.”

Erik ten Hag assured he has no issues with Maguire and insists positive performances will lead to a return to his starting XI.

Amid World Cup, ten Hag’s United lose a friendly to Cadiz

Did you think yesterday was an off-day for all the football fans? Well, your guess is half right. There was friendly football action happening at Cadiz, Spain, miles away from Qatar, where the entire world’s eyes are at the moment.

Manchester United were in action against Spanish football club Cadiz yesterday. And the La Liga club managed to beat the English Premier League giants 4-2 in the first match for the club since axing Cristiano Ronaldo.

The game saw Cadiz take a lead of 2 goals within the first 15 minutes, thanks to Carlos Garcia and Anthony Lozano’s wonderful strikes. However, the English side managed to get one back, with Anthony Martial converting a penalty. The hosts, Cadiz, went into the break with a comfortable 2-1 lead.

As the second half began, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo scored the equaliser to make the scoreline 2-2. However, the club’s defence faltered since. They made a lot of defensive errors that cost them two goals; one from Ruben Sobrino and another from Tomás Alarcon.

Erik ten Hag, the coach of Manchester United, was disappointed with the team’s efforts. Speaking with MUTV after the game, the Manchester United manager spoke about the game in general. ‘More negatives than positives’ was the real takeaway point from the interview.

Manchester United will next face Spanish club Real Betis on 10th December. The club will try to make the most out of this game.
