India's ODI World Cup Pitch Controversy: Rathour Refutes Kaif's Allegations

India’s ODI World Cup Pitch Controversy: Rathour Refutes Kaif’s Allegations

The Indian cricket team’s recent triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup has overshadowed the controversy surrounding the pitch used in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. However, former India star Mohammad Kaif’s allegations that the pitch was deliberately made slow have reignited the debate.

Kaif claimed that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid inspected the pitch for three days before the final and requested a slow track to counter Australia’s pace attack. Former batting coach Viram Rathour, who was present for both the T20 and ODI World Cups, has now refuted these allegations.

Rathour insists that the pitch was similar to those used in previous matches and that it eased out as the day progressed. He also dismissed the notion that curators operate independently of team influence.

“When you are moving around the pitch, you have to say just two lines – please don’t put water, just reduce the grass. This happens. That is truth. And it should be done. You are playing at home,” Kaif had said.

Rathour’s comments contradict Kaif’s claims and suggest that the pitch was not deliberately altered to favor India. However, the controversy highlights the ongoing debate about the role of pitch preparation in international cricket.

Kohli's Strike Rate Debate: Former Cricketers Slam Double Standards

Kohli’s Strike Rate Debate: Former Cricketers Slam Double Standards

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) star batter Virat Kohli has been a consistent run-scorer in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, despite facing criticism over his strike rate. Kohli currently sits second in the scoring charts with 500 runs in 10 matches, just nine runs behind Orange Cap holder Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, his innings have often been overshadowed by his debatable strike rate.

Amidst the criticism, Kohli has found support from former India cricketers Irfan Pathan and Mohammad Kaif. They have slammed his critics for double standards, citing the example of SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Travis Head.

Head has been in impressive form in the IPL, scoring 396 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of over 194. However, during SRH’s match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Head struggled to time the ball, scoring 58 off 44 balls with a strike rate of 131.8.

Irfan and Kaif argued that if Kohli had played a similar knock, his strike rate would have been heavily criticized. “According to his ability, you have never seen him play like this. No matter what you say that there was good bowling and everything, but every cricketer should be treated equally,” said Irfan.

Kaif echoed his sentiments, adding, “If this was Virat Kohli, I can guarantee that people would have said only 58 runs in 44 balls? What is this? They would say it is low and there would have debates about his strike rate. But I believe that this was a good innings by Head.”

Irfan further highlighted Kohli’s importance to RCB, especially considering the team’s struggles in the tournament. “But if there was Virat Kohli instead, people would have stuck to the strike rate but here we are talking about taking responsibility for team’s victory, so please treat everyone equally,” he added.

Kohli himself has addressed the debate surrounding his strike rate, taking a swipe at his critics after the match against Gujarat Titans. “All the people who talk about [my] strike rate and me not playing spin well are the ones who love to talk about these things. But for me, it is just about winning the game. There’s a reason why you do it for 15 years. Because you do this day in and day out and won games for your team,” said Kohli.

Kohli will have the opportunity to reclaim the Orange Cap when RCB face Gujarat Titans on Saturday.

India’s T20 World Cup Squad: A Balanced and Formidable Unit

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has hailed the Indian cricket team’s composition for the upcoming T20 World Cup, praising the balance and strength of the squad selected by chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Kaif believes that the team’s bowling unit is particularly impressive, with a mix of four fast bowlers and four spinners. “A very strong team has been selected,” he said. “It is very balanced – 4 fast bowlers, 4 spinners. Among the 8 bowlers there are three all-rounders – Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya.”

The batting order also received Kaif’s approval, with the opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma expected to provide an aggressive start. “Jaiswal always gives a start, plays aggressive cricket,” Kaif noted. “You will play day matches in the US and West Indies, there will be no dew factor there, you have to attack in the powerplay, play aggressively.”

Kaif also highlighted the versatility of the middle order, with Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson both capable of playing match-winning innings. He also praised the inclusion of all-rounders Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Hardik Pandya, who can contribute with both bat and ball.

Kaif’s analysis extended to the inclusion of Shivam Dube over Rinku Singh, citing Dube’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball. “You can also give an over or two to Dube, so they have taken him, it’s a good choice,” he remarked.

Overall, Kaif expressed confidence in the squad’s potential and satisfaction with Agarkar’s selections. “Isse achchi team Ajit Agarkar nahi bana sakte the [Ajit Agarkar could not have made a better team than this],” he declared.

With the T20 World Cup 2024 fast approaching, the debate over India’s squad selection has intensified. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has weighed in with his picks, opting for a lineup that includes some surprising omissions.

Kaif’s XI features Yashasvi Jaiswal as an opener alongside Rohit Sharma, replacing the in-form Ishan Kishan. The middle order remains largely unchanged, with Virat Kohli at No. 3, Suryakumar Yadav at No. 4, and Hardik Pandya at No. 5. Rishabh Pant retains his spot at No. 6.

To bolster the team’s batting depth, Kaif has opted for a plethora of all-rounders. Axar Patel slots in at No. 7, followed by Ravindra Jadeja at No. 8. Kuldeep Yadav, known for his deceptive bowling, takes the No. 9 spot.

Kohli’s Form Key to RCB’s IPL Playoff Hopes, Says Kaif

Virat Kohli’s Form Crucial for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL Playoff Hopes

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has highlighted the pivotal role of Virat Kohli’s form in determining Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) journey to the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs this season.

Kohli, who has been absent from international cricket since January, is expected to return to the IPL fold ahead of RCB’s season opener against the Chennai Super Kings on March 22. Kaif believes that Kohli’s exceptional form over the past couple of years makes him a key player for RCB.

“Virat Kohli has been playing amazing cricket for the last 1-2 years; he has been in good form… He has been in amazing form since then, and when a player like Virat Kohli is in form, he knows how to make runs in every match,” Kaif said on the Star Sports show “Game Plan.”

Kohli has a stellar IPL record, having scored 639 runs at an average of 53.25 in the 2023 season. Kaif pointed out that Kohli consistently performs well in the tournament, especially after returning from a break.

“One special thing about Virat Kohli is that every time he comes back from a break, he plays really well… Virat Kohli’s form will decide RCB’s place in the playoffs,” Kaif stressed.

While acknowledging the presence of other key players like Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell in the RCB lineup, Kaif emphasized that Kohli’s form is indispensable for the team’s playoff hopes.

“It’s important that Virat Kohli is in form with Maxwell and Green for RCB to qualify for the playoffs,” Kaif added.

Kohli’s return to the IPL is highly anticipated, and his form will be closely watched as RCB aims to secure a spot in the playoffs.
