Ashwin Surprised by SRH's Cummins Captaincy Appointment

Ashwin Surprised by SRH’s Cummins Captaincy Appointment

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s off-spinner, has expressed surprise over SunRisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) decision to appoint Pat Cummins as captain. SRH had previously sacked Aiden Markram, who led their sister franchise, SunRisers Eastern Cape (SEC), to consecutive SA20 league titles.

Ashwin stated that he was shocked by the move, especially considering Markram’s success with SEC. He suggested that SRH could have benefited from Markram’s experience and leadership skills.

“SunRisers have hit two titles back to back at the SA20. They’ve done it with two extraordinary teams. I was quite shocked, actually. They have made Pat Cummins the captain. I was having a small hunch that they would go with Markram. Markram had an extraordinary season for his franchise in the SA20. The cross-pollination would have been amazing,” Ashwin said.

While acknowledging Cummins’ credentials as a world-class player, Ashwin raised concerns about the potential for a “problem of plenty” in SRH’s leadership department. He suggested that the franchise could struggle to accommodate the leadership aspirations of multiple star players.

“Pat Cummins is a no-brainer. But with Cummins as a captain, they will have a problem of plenty in the team with so many stars. Keeping Travis Head as backup, they would go for Markram, Pat Cummins, (Heinrich) Klaasen, and (Wanindu) Hasaranga. Because Hasaranga is a crucial facet for them. If they decide Hasaranga is not needed, in some venues they can play (Fazalhaq) Farooqi or Marco Jansen instead of him. This is what I thought because it makes sense,” he added.

Cummins, who has never captained a team in T20 cricket, expressed his excitement about leading SRH in IPL 2024. He emphasized the importance of an aggressive start to the season and praised the team’s young talent.

“So, a bit of planning to go and then just wanna get off to a really good start. T20s are hard. Kolkata’s a good team, but I think just wanna see a really aggressive, start to the season,” Cummins said.

SRH will begin their IPL 2024 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.

Pat Cummins Embraces Captaincy Challenge in IPL Debut

Pat Cummins Embraces Captaincy Challenge in IPL Debut

Pat Cummins, the World Cup-winning Australian skipper, is embarking on a new challenge as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While the shortest format of the game may not be physically demanding, Cummins acknowledges the mental challenges and logistical complexities involved in the two-month-long tournament.

Cummins, who also led Australia to victory in the World Test Championship, is tasked with reviving the fortunes of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who finished at the bottom of the table last season. “It’s a format I’ve never captained before,” Cummins said. “Tomorrow is going to be my first game. With a bit of preparation, I’m good to go.”

The IPL’s demanding schedule, with 14 games played over six to seven weeks, poses a unique challenge for players. “It’s got its challenges,” Cummins explained. “You play 14 games in six-seven weeks, plus finals. I’m used to playing a lot of Test cricket, so four overs isn’t as taxing on your body. But it can be mentally taxing to travel, you’re playing a new team every few days you’ve got to prepare for.”

Despite the challenges, Cummins is confident in his team’s abilities. “We have got loads of experienced guys excited with the lineup,” he said. “Bhuvi I will be leaning on a lot. We have got a lot of experience and young guys as well.”

Cummins, who was the second most expensive buy at this year’s IPL auction, will not only have the burden of captaincy but also the pressure to deliver with the ball. He will have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the only other experienced bowler in the line-up, along with T Natarajan and Jaydev Unadkat.

“We have got loads of experienced guys excited with the lineup,” Cummins said. “Bhuvi I will be leaning on a lot. We have got a lot of experience and young guys as well.”

Saturday’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders is being billed as a clash between Cummins and Mitchell Starc, another Australian fast bowler. “Hopefully I don’t have to face Starc,” Cummins joked. “It’s funny beauty of the IPL. These guys playing Starcy for 15 years.”

IPL 2024: 10 Indian Players Could Earn Over Rs 100 Crore Without Salary Cap

IPL 2024: 10 Indian Players Could Earn Over Rs 100 Crore Without Salary Cap

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is poised to be an exciting spectacle, with teams bolstering their squads through the recent auction. While some teams have maintained their core, others have made significant acquisitions.

Australian pace duo Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc commanded record-breaking bids, fetching over Rs 20 crore each for SunRisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively. This marked the first time the Rs 20 crore threshold was surpassed in IPL history.

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa believes that the absence of a salary cap would result in astronomical salaries for Indian players. He estimates that as many as 10 Indian players could command over Rs 100 crore if the purse limit were removed.

“With an open auction and no purse limit, we have 10 players who can get over 100 crore,” Uthappa said on News24 Sports. “Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal would all be in that bracket.”

Uthappa, who has played for several IPL franchises, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, emphasized the exceptional talent of these players. He highlighted their consistent performances, match-winning abilities, and fan following as factors that would drive their market value.

The IPL’s salary cap of Rs 100 crore per franchise ensures a level playing field and prevents teams from hoarding star players. However, Uthappa’s comments raise questions about the potential financial implications if the cap were lifted.

With the IPL 2024 season approaching, fans can expect intense competition and thrilling matches as teams vie for the coveted trophy. The presence of world-class players and the possibility of record-breaking salaries add to the anticipation surrounding the tournament.

Australia Unchanged for Second New Zealand Test, Boland Likely to Return Home

Australia Unchanged for Second New Zealand Test, Boland Likely to Return Home

Australia’s Test team will remain unchanged for the fourth consecutive match, with the bowling quartet also set to stay intact for the seventh time this summer. Back-up quick Scott Boland is likely to be released to play Sheffield Shield cricket for Victoria on Monday.

Captain Pat Cummins confirmed the expected lineup for the second Test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, starting Friday. Australia aims to secure a 2-0 series victory after their triumph in Wellington.

The final round of Shield matches begins Monday, and Victoria has a chance to qualify for a third straight final by hosting Western Australia at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Boland and Michael Neser are the two reserve quicks on tour, while Matt Renshaw is the only spare batter in the 14-man squad.

Australia must retain at least one spare batter and one spare bowler in case of a concussion but could release one of the quicks to play in the Shield. Queensland is out of contention for the final and would not require Neser’s return.

Boland is expected to be released after Friday’s toss to prepare for Victoria’s match against Western Australia. “There was talk of maybe sending Scotty back for Victoria but holding Nes back from Queensland just to annoy Marnus [Labuschagne] and Usman [Khawaja],” Cummins said.

Boland has had a frustrating summer. He starred in Australia’s World Test Championship final victory last June and kept Mitchell Starc out of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston. However, England targeted him in the two Tests he played in the Ashes, and Australia reverted to their “big three” for the final two Tests.

Boland was rested for specific Shield matches at the start of the summer at the request of Australia’s selectors to be fresh for the Tests. However, the trio of Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc have remained fit, and Boland has played only five first-class matches this season.

“I think I said at the start of the summer I’d be surprised we played all seven just because it’s rare that something doesn’t pop up,” Cummins said. “But thankfully we’ve all kind of managed all the little niggles that pop up pretty well.”

While Australia is settled, there is caution heading into the second Test. In 2022 against Sri Lanka and last month against the West Indies, Australia squandered 1-0 leads with poor performances in the second match of each series.

Concerns surround the batting group, with frank discussions held internally during the week about being more ruthless and accountable to individual plans. “I think it’s just decision-making around plans, and having really clear plans,” Cummins said. “It doesn’t mean you need to have 12 shot options. It might only be two or three.”

Pat Cummins: India Tour Was ‘Hardest Time of My Life’ Amid Mother’s Illness

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has opened up about the emotional turmoil he endured during the India tour last year, as he grappled with the impending loss of his mother to cancer.

Cummins, who was in India for a Test series, made the difficult decision to return home to be by his mother’s side as she received palliative care. “Flying away… That’s the hardest time of my life, easily,” Cummins said in an interview for the Imperfects podcast.

The captaincy weighed heavily on Cummins’ mind during that period. “I remember my manager and a couple of other people around me who I normally listen to were calling me and being like, ‘I think we need to give a little bit of a reason why you’ve gone home’, and I’m like, ‘Nah, don’t care’,” he recalled.

Cummins’ mother, Maria, passed away last year. The cricketer said he tried to keep her final days as private as possible and didn’t explain to her why he flew home after playing in two Tests in India.

“But that time in particular – because we knew roughly the timeline, and knowing Mum and Dad as well; how much joy they get, sitting together, watching me play – that gave me enough confidence to go and play, and they were desperate for me to go and play, and I knew I could hop on a flight at any time and come back,” Cummins said.

Despite his determination to play, Cummins admitted that his mind was not fully on the game. “But for those couple of weeks I was in India, especially now I look back on it, my mind was not in India, it was back home the whole time,” he said.

Cummins even considered quitting as Australia captain at one point, as his desire to be with his mother intensified. “I honestly do not care what people think,” he said. “After about six or seven days when I knew I wasn’t going to come back to India, we said Mum’s in palliative care. But I literally could not have cared less what people were saying about me.”

Cummins’ decision to prioritize his family over cricket was met with understanding and support from his teammates and Cricket Australia. The captain’s resilience and determination to balance his personal and professional life serves as an inspiration to many.

Pat Cummins to Lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024

Pat Cummins to Lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024

Pat Cummins Appointed Captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2024

Pat Cummins, the Australian Test and ODI captain, has been appointed as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Cummins replaces Aiden Markram, who led the team in the 2023 season.

Cummins’ appointment marks a significant shift for Sunrisers Hyderabad, as he has never captained a side in the IPL before. However, his impressive leadership credentials with the Australian national team have convinced the franchise to entrust him with the responsibility.

Under Cummins’ captaincy, Australia has achieved remarkable success in recent years. They won the World Test Championship in 2023, defeating India in the final. Cummins also led the team to victory in the 2023 ODI World Cup, cementing Australia’s status as one of the top cricketing nations in the world.

Cummins’ leadership style is characterized by his calm demeanor, strategic acumen, and ability to inspire his teammates. He is known for his meticulous planning and attention to detail, which has been instrumental in Australia’s recent triumphs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will be hoping that Cummins can replicate his success with the Australian team at the IPL level. The franchise has struggled in recent seasons, failing to qualify for the playoffs since 2019. Cummins’ appointment is seen as a major step towards rebuilding the team and challenging for the title.

Cummins will have a talented squad at his disposal, including the likes of Kane Williamson, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Umran Malik. With his leadership and the team’s potential, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be one of the teams to watch in IPL 2024.

Labuschagne's Form Under Scrutiny as Australia's Batting Faces Pressure

Labuschagne’s Form Under Scrutiny as Australia’s Batting Faces Pressure

Despite Australia’s victory in the second Test against New Zealand, concerns linger over the team’s batting performance. Marnus Labuschagne, once a cornerstone of the batting order, has endured a lean run of form, raising questions about his place in the side.

Labuschagne’s recent struggles have seen his Test average drop below 50, a significant decline from his peak of over 60 in December 2022. However, captain Pat Cummins remains adamant that Labuschagne’s position is secure.

“Absolutely not,” Cummins said when asked if Labuschagne was under pressure. “I think he’d be the first to admit he’d like to score some more runs. But it’s not through lack of trying in the nets.”

Cummins emphasized that the team believes in Labuschagne’s ability and that his struggles are temporary. “We’re very clear that these six guys are the six best batters in Australia,” he said.

While Labuschagne’s form has been a concern, the entire batting group has come under scrutiny. Australia’s second innings collapse in Wellington, where they were bowled out for just 164, highlighted the need for improvement.

Coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged the need for the batters to perform collectively. “We want the top six, seven batters to be performing as a collective,” he said. “So I think while the rest are performing around that and you’re winning games of cricket, I think the concern levels are fractionally lower.”

McDonald also expressed concerns about Alex Carey’s dismissals in Wellington, where he holed out to cover twice. “They’re going on at the moment,” McDonald said. “He’s disappointed with that as a method to Glenn Phillips.”

Overall, McDonald believes the batting group can improve, particularly in the third innings of matches. “We feel like we can be better,” he said. “We feel as though at times we have underachieved with the bat which has left games open.”

Cummins echoed McDonald’s sentiments, calling for the batters to be more ruthless. “I think it’s something we can get better at, the whole 11 batters, particularly around that third innings where the game seems to speed up a little bit,” he said.

Dale Steyn Steps Down as SRH Bowling Coach, Pat Cummins Eyed as Captain

Dale Steyn Steps Down as SRH Bowling Coach, Pat Cummins Eyed as Captain

Former South African pace legend Dale Steyn will not be part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coaching staff for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Steyn has requested a break from his coaching responsibilities, prompting the franchise to search for a replacement bowling coach.

Steyn’s departure comes after a successful stint with SRH, where he played a pivotal role in the development of young speedster Umran Malik. Malik has since earned an India cap in T20Is and ODIs, and recently received a fast-bowling contract from the BCCI.

Despite his absence, Steyn is expected to return to the franchise next season if all necessary arrangements are met. SRH has already appointed former New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori as their new head coach.

The franchise is also considering appointing Pat Cummins as their captain for the upcoming season. Cummins, who was acquired for a whopping INR 20.5 crore in the auction last year, has led Australia to victory in the 2023 World Test Championship and Men’s ODI World Cup.

SRH, who finished at the bottom of the points table last year, will be hoping for a turnaround under Vettori and Cummins’ leadership. They will open their 2024 campaign on March 23 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, followed by their first home match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on March 27 against Mumbai Indians.
