RCB's Gamble on Chahal: A Strategic Move with Mixed Outcomes

RCB’s Gamble on Chahal: A Strategic Move with Mixed Outcomes

RCB’s Decision to Release Chahal: A Strategic Gamble with Mixed Results

Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) director of cricket, Mike Hesson, has shed light on the franchise’s decision to release leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal ahead of the IPL 2022 season auction. Chahal, who recently achieved the historic milestone of 200 IPL wickets, was a key member of RCB for eight seasons.

Hesson explained that the decision to not retain Chahal was primarily driven by financial considerations. By retaining only three players, RCB gained an additional four crore rupees to spend in the auction, which they hoped to use to acquire both Chahal and pacer Harshal Patel.

However, RCB’s plans were disrupted when Chahal’s name emerged late in the auction, coinciding with their pursuit of Sri Lankan spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. RCB prioritized Hasaranga, who was available earlier in the auction, and inadvertently missed out on Chahal.

“Yuzi (Chahal) is one I will be frustrated with until I have finished my career and probably beyond. He is an outstanding bowler,” Hesson admitted.

Chahal’s departure from RCB has been a mixed bag for both the player and the franchise. Chahal has continued to excel with the Rajasthan Royals, claiming 61 wickets in 39 matches. RCB, on the other hand, have struggled to find a consistent replacement for Chahal, with their spin attack often proving to be a weak link.

Despite the strategic rationale behind Chahal’s release, Hesson acknowledged that it was a difficult decision to make. “It’s a tough one because you’re losing a quality player,” he said. “But at the end of the day, you have to make decisions that you think are best for the team.”

Karthik's Missed Singles Prove Costly as RCB Falls Short in IPL Thriller

Karthik’s Missed Singles Prove Costly as RCB Falls Short in IPL Thriller

Dinesh Karthik’s Missed Singles Cost RCB Dearly in Narrow IPL Defeat, Says Harbhajan Singh

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has criticized Dinesh Karthik’s decision to decline singles in the final over of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) narrow one-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

RCB appeared poised for victory after Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar forged a century partnership. However, Karthik’s reluctance to take singles proved costly, as he ultimately fell to Andre Russell on the final ball of the over.

“I feel DK was a very important player in this match,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. “Karn (Sharma) came in and struck three sixes, while they were batting Karthik missed two to three singles and I feel that it proved costly for RCB.”

Harbhajan believes that Karthik’s missed singles could have made a significant difference in the outcome of the match. “If he had taken those singles then maybe this situation wouldn’t have unfolded,” he said. “They only needed one run, small things matter.”

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis had won the toss and elected to field first. Phil Salt’s explosive 48 in 14 balls gave KKR a strong start, but wickets fell regularly at the other end. Shreyas Iyer (50), Rinku Singh (24), Andre Russell (27*), and Ramandeep Singh (24*) contributed valuable runs to take KKR to 222/6.

RCB lost Virat Kohli (18) and du Plessis (7) early, but Jacks (55) and Patidar (52) revived their hopes with a 102-run partnership. However, their efforts proved insufficient as Karthik’s missed singles ultimately cost RCB the match.

Kohli's Controversial Dismissal Sparks Umpiring Debate in IPL 2024

Virat Kohli’s Controversial Dismissal Sparks Umpiring Debate in IPL 2024

Since Sunday’s match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the dismissal of Virat Kohli has become a major talking point in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kohli was caught and bowled by Harshit Rana, but the legality of the delivery has been questioned.

Kohli was convinced that the full toss was a no-ball, as it appeared to be above his waist height. The former RCB captain expressed his frustration by shouting at the umpire, which resulted in a 50% match fee fine.

Replays showed that the ball was dipping, and if Kohli had been standing at his normal batting position, it would have ended up below his waist. However, Kohli was standing outside his crease, which led to the dismissal.

The incident has sparked a debate about umpiring standards in the IPL. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif took to Instagram to criticize the umpiring, stating that “clear unplayable beamer gets Kohli out and a ball that passed under Dhoni’s bat declared wide.” Kohli himself liked Kaif’s post.

The IPL has released a statement regarding Kohli’s punishment, stating that he breached the IPL Code of Conduct by showing dissent. Kohli admitted to the offense and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction.

The incident has highlighted the importance of accurate umpiring in cricket. With the use of technology, such as the Decision Review System (DRS), there is less room for error. However, the human element remains, and mistakes can still occur.

The debate over Kohli’s dismissal is likely to continue, as fans and experts alike question the decision-making of the umpires. It is crucial for the IPL to ensure that umpiring standards are maintained at the highest level to preserve the integrity of the competition.

KKR Pacer Rana Backs Starc to Turnaround Performance

KKR Pacer Rana Backs Starc to Turnaround Performance

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Harshit Rana has expressed unwavering confidence in star fast bowler Mitchell Starc, despite his recent struggles in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Starc conceded 55 runs in three overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday, but Rana believes the 34-year-old speedster will bounce back.

“It’s his own plan. Every bowler takes the field with a plan. He is a top bowler and someday, he will win us games. We are not worried about him. We have full faith in him,” Rana said in the post-match press conference.

Rana identified the 12th over of RCB’s run-chase as the turning point in the match. Andre Russell dismissed Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar in quick succession, while Sunil Narine removed Cameron Green and Mahipal Lomror in the following over.

“The over from Andre Russell was the turning point in the game where he took two wickets. In the last five overs, our bowlers did exceptionally, did not give away enough runs. That was the phase we played really well,” Rana added.

KKR’s victory over RCB propelled them to second place in the IPL standings with five wins and two losses. RCB, on the other hand, remained at the bottom of the table with just one win and seven losses.

Rana praised Starc’s composure in the final over, when Karn Sharma blasted three huge sixes off the Australian. Starc held his nerve and helped KKR secure a thrilling one-run victory.

“He is a bowler who can help the Knights win games,” Rana said of Starc. “We have full faith in him.”

KKR's Salt Believes Kohli Dismissal Was Fortunate, Praises Narine's Batting

KKR’s Salt Believes Kohli Dismissal Was Fortunate, Praises Narine’s Batting

Phil Salt, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) wicketkeeper-batter, believes that Virat Kohli’s dismissal off a high full toss was a fortunate call for his team, contributing to their narrow one-run victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a high-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) match.

The use of the new Hawk-Eye technology to determine the height of the delivery played a crucial role, with TV umpire Michael Gough ruling that Harshit Rana’s waist-high ball was fair. Kohli, who was batting aggressively, managed to score 18 runs off just seven balls before being dismissed by Rana, who took a return catch. This dismissal proved to be a turning point in RCB’s chase of a challenging target of 223 runs at Eden Gardens, ultimately leading to their narrow defeat.

“It’s a split opinion, we know that. From our point of view, we feel like we may have got away with one there. It’s the rub of the greens, one of those calls,” said Salt, who is ranked No. 2 in the ICC T20I batting rankings, at the Knight Golf event in Kolkata.

The Englishman also suggested that utilizing technology in this way is ultimately advantageous for the game, hinting at the potential for a future review to evaluate the effectiveness of such technological advancements.

“They brought that data in, the no-ball data, for exactly that purpose. I feel like in 12 months’ time maybe there’ll be some sort of review. Is it working? Is it not working? Is it a new thing to the game?”

“But personally, from a player’s point of view, any time you’re using data and technology to be more precise and get the right decisions, that’s a good thing for the game,” Salt added.

Salt and Sunil Narine, the opening pair for KKR, have been instrumental in scoring the majority of runs for the team, accumulating a total of 535 runs from seven innings. Their strong performances have contributed significantly to KKR’s success, as the team has won five out of their seven matches, placing them at the forefront of contention for a playoff spot.

“It’s great batting with Sunil, he is a very, very low-key chill guy. He’s got a very different sort of skill set when he’s opening the batting, as opposed to, up and down the order,” Salt said.

“I suppose one of the good things for me is he takes the pressure off, and I don’t have to strike at a rate of 200 in my first 10 balls. Some games I might, but I don’t have to.”

“Normally, one of us gets going, and the other one feeds the strike. So, if we get a good start, we get a couple of boundaries away. You know, we can produce really big power plays, which is something that we’ve done.”

They have gone about their ways with a meticulous approach, picking the right bowler to attack and relied on match-ups, Salt said.

“Our conversations are mainly, who’s going to take what ball, you know, who likes to match up, left arm spin, right arm pace, all that sort of thing.”

“Normally one of us wants to put their hand up and take that arm. We keep it very, very simple.”

Narine has been a revelation with the bat at the top of the order as the KKR spinner who was known as a pinch-hitter, has batted this time with poise and patience. Narine struck his maiden T20 century, scoring 109 against Rajasthan Royals the other day.

Gambhir-Umpire Confrontation Overshadows Thrilling RCB-KKR IPL Clash

Gambhir-Umpire Confrontation Overshadows Thrilling RCB-KKR IPL Clash

IPL 2024: Heated Confrontation Between Gautam Gambhir and Umpires Overshadows Thrilling RCB-KKR Match

During the high-stakes IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, a heated confrontation between former India batsman and KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir and the umpires marred an otherwise thrilling encounter.

The incident occurred as RCB approached KKR’s challenging total of 222 runs. With just 31 runs needed from 12 balls, the tension was palpable. A visibly upset KKR captain Shreyas Iyer signaled towards the dugout, prompting Gambhir to approach the fourth umpire.

Gambhir engaged in a fervent debate, making gestures towards his legs. According to reports, he protested the substitution of Sunil Narine with Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Despite his objections, the umpire upheld the ruling, forcing Narine to resume play for the final two overs.

This incident followed another controversial moment involving RCB’s Virat Kohli, who contested an umpire’s decision after being declared out on a full toss. Kohli, adamant that it was a no-ball, sought a review. However, replays confirmed that he was well out of his crease at the time of the delivery.

Despite rapid half-centuries from Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar, RCB fell agonizingly short by just one run. Jacks scored a brisk 55 off 32 balls, while Patidar contributed a quick 52 from 23 deliveries. Their efforts, however, were not enough to overcome the target set by KKR.

In the end, RCB were all out for 221, even after a last-ditch effort by Karn Sharma, who smashed 20 runs off just 7 balls. KKR’s bowling attack was led by Andre Russell, who took three wickets for 25 runs. Sunil Narine and Harshit Rana also played crucial roles, each taking two wickets, contributing to KKR’s nail-biting victory over RCB.

Umpiring Controversies Mar RCB's Narrow Defeat to KKR

Umpiring Controversies Mar RCB’s Narrow Defeat to KKR

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) suffered a heartbreaking one-run defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Sunday, but the match was marred by two controversial umpiring decisions that have sparked outrage among fans and experts alike.

The first incident occurred in the 13th over when Virat Kohli was given out caught behind off the bowling of Umesh Yadav. Replays showed that the ball appeared to be above waist height, but the on-field umpires upheld the decision. The broadcaster’s Hawk-Eye technology also confirmed that the ball was indeed above waist height, but the third umpire was not consulted.

The second controversy arose in the 17th over when Suyash Prabhudesai smashed a shot towards the fine-leg boundary. The umpires initially signaled four runs, but fans and commentators alike felt that the ball had crossed the boundary rope. A zoomed-in video of the incident later emerged, seemingly confirming that the ball had indeed gone for a six.

However, the on-field umpires did not consult the third umpire and the decision stood as a four. This decision proved costly for RCB, as they eventually lost the match by a narrow margin of one run.

Fans and experts have taken to social media to express their outrage over the umpiring decisions. Many have questioned why the third umpire was not consulted in both instances, especially given the close nature of the calls.

The match officials and the IPL management have yet to comment on the matter, but the controversy is likely to continue for some time. The incidents have raised questions about the accuracy and consistency of umpiring in the IPL, and have highlighted the need for a more robust review system.

Virat Kohli’s Post-Match Discussion with Umpire Draws Attention, Rinku Singh’s Presence Raises Eyebrows

Following Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Virat Kohli engaged in a heated post-match discussion with the umpire. The incident stemmed from a controversial dismissal earlier in the game, leaving Kohli visibly aggrieved.

As Kohli passionately gestured and debated with the umpire, Rinku Singh, a player for KKR, stood nearby. Singh’s presence during the animated discussion raised eyebrows, especially in light of recent events surrounding a bat controversy between the two players.

Earlier, KKR had posted a video on social media where Rinku informed Kohli that the bat he had gifted him during a previous match had broken while batting against a spinner. Kohli’s sarcastic response to Rinku’s request for another bat hinted at some tension between the two players.

In the video, Kohli sarcastically thanked Rinku for informing him about the broken bat and dismissed the idea of giving away a second bat. “You took a bat one match back, now you want me to give you two bats in two matches? I have to face the consequences at the end,” Kohli told Rinku, seemingly frustrated.

Rinku, however, persisted, expressing his regret and pleading with Kohli to lend him another bat, swearing that he would take better care of it. “I swear on you I won’t break your bat ever again. I’ve kept the broken one, I can show it to you,” Rinku said towards the end of the video.

The interaction between Kohli and Rinku, both during the match and in the aftermath, has sparked speculation on social media. Some users have suggested that Rinku’s presence during Kohli’s discussion with the umpire was an attempt to further his request for another bat. While the true nature of their exchange remains uncertain, the incident has added an intriguing subplot to the ongoing IPL season.

Rajat Patidar's Heroics Almost Guide RCB to Victory in IPL 2024 Thriller

Rajat Patidar’s Heroics Almost Guide RCB to Victory in IPL 2024 Thriller

Rajat Patidar, the Madhya Pradesh batsman, has emerged as a key player for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2024. His two half-centuries, including a match-winning 112 in the eliminator last year, have showcased his talent and determination.

In RCB’s recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Patidar’s 52 off 23 balls almost guided his team to victory. Chasing KKR’s 222 for 6, Patidar and Will Jacks (55 off 32) put on a 102-run partnership to put RCB in a strong position. However, their dismissals in the 12th over halted RCB’s momentum.

Despite a late blitz by Dinesh Karthik (25 off 18) and Karn Sharma (20 off 7), RCB fell just one run short of their target, losing by a heartbreaking margin. Patidar’s performance in the match highlighted his ability to play under pressure and contribute to his team’s success.

Patidar’s journey with RCB began in 2021, but he was released after playing only four matches. He returned in 2022 as a replacement player and became the third-highest run-getter for his team with 333 runs. His unbeaten 112 against Lucknow Super Giants in the eliminator was a testament to his batting prowess.

Patidar’s success in IPL 2024 is a testament to his hard work and dedication. He has overcome injuries and setbacks to establish himself as a valuable asset for RCB. His ability to play match-winning innings and contribute to his team’s success makes him a player to watch in the upcoming matches of IPL 2024.

RCB Skipper Faf du Plessis Fined Rs 12 Lakh, PBKS Captain Sam Curran Penalized for Offenses

RCB Skipper Faf du Plessis Fined Rs 12 Lakh, PBKS Captain Sam Curran Penalized for Offenses

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis has been fined a hefty Rs 12 lakh, while Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Sam Curran has been penalized 50% of his match fees for their respective offenses during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Du Plessis’ fine stems from his team’s slow over rate during RCB’s thrilling one-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. It was RCB’s first over-rate offense of the season.

The IPL statement read, “Mr Faf du Plessis, Captain, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024.”

Curran, on the other hand, was fined for showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during PBKS’ three-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans (GT) in Mullanpur on Sunday. The offense falls under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which prohibits “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.”

“Curran committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offense and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” an IPL media release stated.

The loss against GT was Punjab’s fourth on the trot, leaving them languishing in ninth place in the points table.
