Football Ignites Paris 2024 Olympics with Spain, Argentina Headlining

Football ignited the flame of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Tuesday, with Spain and Argentina, the reigning FIFA World Cup and Copa America champions, respectively, taking center stage in Paris and Saint-Etienne.

At Parc des Princes in western Paris, Spain faced Uzbekistan, while Argentina, without Lionel Messi, encountered Morocco at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Étienne. Spain’s Marc Pubill etched his name in history by scoring the first goal of the Summer Games in the 29th minute.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino graced the occasion, meeting players before the Uzbekistan-Spain match at Parc des Princes, the former home of Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe.

As the beautiful game kickstarted the action-packed Summer Olympics in Paris, let’s delve into the world of football and highlight some of the biggest names vying for Olympic gold:

Achraf Hakimi (Morocco)

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is a prominent figure at the Summer Olympics. The 25-year-old led Morocco to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and has opted to miss PSG’s pre-season preparations to compete in the Games.

Alexandre Lacazette (France)

UEFA Charges Spain’s Morata and Rodri for Gibraltar Chant

UEFA has charged Spain captain Alvaro Morata and midfielder Rodri with violating its “basic rules of decent conduct” after they sang about a sovereignty claim on Gibraltar at the team’s European Championship title celebration. The charges also include “bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute.”

Morata and Rodri led thousands of fans in singing “Gibraltar is Spanish” at a celebration in Madrid last week after Spain’s 2-1 win over England in the Euro 2024 final. Gibraltar, located on the southern tip of Spain, has been a British overseas territory for more than 300 years.

The Gibraltar soccer federation filed a formal complaint to UEFA, which has now opened disciplinary proceedings against Morata and Rodri. The federation welcomed the move, saying it was “an important first step in order to establish the unlawfulness of the chant.”

UEFA’s disciplinary body will rule on the case at a later date, with the players facing a possible suspension from Nations League games in September. In a similar incident at Euro 2024, UEFA banned Albania player Mirlind Daku for two games after he led fans in nationalist chants against Serbia and North Macedonia.

Morata recently completed a move from Atletico Madrid to AC Milan, while Rodri, who was named player of the tournament at Euro 2024, plays for Manchester City.

PV Sindhu’s title drought continues as she bows out of Spain Masters in the quarter-finals. The former world champion fought valiantly but ultimately fell short against Thai sixth seed Supanida Katethong in a marathon three-game battle.

Sindhu, the effective top seed in the absence of local favorite Carolina Marin, had a golden opportunity to end her title drought. However, Katethong proved to be a formidable opponent, pushing the match to a nail-biting decider.

In the first game, Sindhu squandered four game points before securing the win. The second game was also closely contested, but Katethong’s consistency proved too much for the Indian.

The decider was a rollercoaster of emotions. Sindhu trailed 15-20 but staged a remarkable comeback to level the score at 20-all. However, uncharacteristic errors from Sindhu allowed Katethong to snatch the victory 24-26, 21-17, 22-20.

In a moment of frustration, Sindhu smashed her racquet on the court, earning a yellow card from the chair umpire. It was a rare display of emotion from the usually composed Indian.

Despite Sindhu’s exit, India’s mixed pair N Sikki Reddy and B Sumeeth Reddy continued their impressive run by reaching the semi-finals. They defeated Indonesian fourth seeds Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Lisa Ayu Kusumawati in three games.

However, women’s doubles third seeds Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa and men’s doubles eighth seeds Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun both suffered quarter-final defeats.

Sindhu’s next tournament will be the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, in April. She will be hoping to break her title drought and regain her winning form.

PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion, has advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Madrid Spain Masters badminton tournament. In her first-round match on Wednesday, Sindhu defeated Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang 21-16, 21-12, in 30 minutes. The second-seeded Sindhu, currently ranked 11th in the world, will face world No. 63 Huang Yu-Husn of Chinese Taipei in the round of 16.

However, India’s other challenger in the women’s singles, Ashmita Chaliha, crashed out in the first round, losing to Ratchanok Intanon 21-13, 21-11 in 28 minutes. India also had a disappointing start in the men’s singles event, with Sathish Kumar Karunakaran losing his closely fought first-round match to Jason Teh of Indonesia, the 56th-ranked shuttler.

Karunakaran also teamed up with Aadya Variath in mixed doubles competition, but they lost to Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Menthari 21-18, 21-14. Following Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen’s withdrawal, Kidambi Srikanth, who was the spearhead of India’s men’s singles challenge in this tournament, registered a 21-18, 21-15 loss to Japan’s Koo Takahashi in the first round.

Mithun Manjunath also lost his first-round game against Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 21-11, 21-12. However, the mixed doubles duo of BS Reddy-N Sikki Reddy marched into pre-quarters following a 16-21, 22-20, 21-14 win over Chinese Taipei’s Chen Zhi Ray and Yang Ching Tun.

The Madrid Spain Masters 2024 offers players ranking points for the Paris 2024 Olympics, taking place from July-August this year. The ranking period for badminton began on May 1, 2023, and will end next month.

Spain beats Croatia on penalties to lift the Nations League cup

2010 World Cup winners Spain have defeated Croatia in the finals to be crowned the champions of the 2023 UEFA Nations League. The team won in the penalties 5-4 thanks to right back Dani Carvajal’s decisive spot-kick.

This is the second time that Spain has reached the final of the UEFA Nations League, while Luka Modric’s Croatia played their first-ever Nations League Final. Spain lost the 2020/21 finals against France and was looking to finish on the right side of the result this time around.

After the game, Spain manager Luis de La Fuente praised his new-formed side and said that their winning mentality is back within the lads.

“These players are used to winning,” de La Fuente told reporters after the game. “They have won so much coming through the ranks and this can continue, I think this competitive streak is back and we can look forward to winning more.”

“I know this generation of players very well and I knew they wouldn’t let me down,” de La Fuente said. “We’ve been very relaxed throughout this week and enjoyed our training sessions. I told them to stay calm because they had done a brilliant job. We would have deserved to win the game earlier, but this makes the win even more epic. I would have been happy even if we hadn’t won tonight, but winning adds the gloss and of course, makes everyone happier,” the manager of Spain added.

In the semi-finals of the Nations League, Croatia defeated the Netherlands 4-2 in an exciting encounter that went down to extra time. Meanwhile, Spain beat Italy 2-1 thanks to an 88th-minute winner from striker Joselu.
