Novak Djokovic Wins Fifth Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award
Novak Djokovic, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, has once again been crowned Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, marking his fifth time receiving the prestigious award. The ceremony, held in Madrid’s Galería De Cristal, celebrated the achievements of athletes from various disciplines.
Djokovic’s remarkable 2023 season saw him secure his 10th Australian Open, third Roland Garros, and fourth US Open titles, equaling the all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles triumphs. His exceptional performance earned him the top honor, beating out soccer stars Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, and sprinter Noah Lyles.
Dutch wheelchair tennis champion Diede de Groot also received the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability award. Her impressive streak of three consecutive calendar Grand Slams brought her total to 14 consecutive major singles titles.
Rafael Nadal and his wife María Francisca Perelló were recognized with the Laureus Sport for Good Award for their work with Fundación Rafa Nadal. The foundation supports over 1,000 vulnerable young people in Spain and India through sports and education programs.
Other notable honorees included Spanish soccer star Aitana Bonmati as Sportswoman of the Year, the Spanish Women’s National Football Team as Team of the Year, and American gymnastics star Simone Biles as Comeback of the Year.
Djokovic expressed his gratitude for the award, acknowledging the support of his team and the inspiration provided by his rivals. He emphasized the significance of the recognition from his fellow athletes, stating, “To earn the votes of my sporting heroes is what makes these awards so coveted in all of sport.”
