During the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings, Kohli surpassed Suresh Raina’s previous record of 172 catches.

Kohli’s remarkable catch at covers to dismiss Jonny Bairstow marked his 173rd catch in T20s, solidifying his position as the most prolific Indian fielder in the format. The former India and RCB skipper has consistently showcased his exceptional fielding abilities, often making spectacular catches look routine.

Kohli’s achievement is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence both on and off the field. His agility, anticipation, and quick reflexes have made him a formidable presence in the outfield.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma follows Kohli on the list with 167 catches, while Manish Pandey (146) and Suryakumar Yadav (136) round out the top five.

In the same match, Kohli also became the first Indian batter to complete 12,000 runs in T20 cricket. The milestone came during RCB’s opening match of the season against Chennai Super Kings. Kohli has amassed these runs in 377 T20 matches and 360 innings, including 8 centuries and 91 fifties.

Pat Cummins Embraces Captaincy Challenge in IPL Debut

Pat Cummins, the World Cup-winning Australian skipper, is embarking on a new challenge as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While the shortest format of the game may not be physically demanding, Cummins acknowledges the mental challenges and logistical complexities involved in the two-month-long tournament.

Cummins, who also led Australia to victory in the World Test Championship, is tasked with reviving the fortunes of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who finished at the bottom of the table last season. “It’s a format I’ve never captained before,” Cummins said. “Tomorrow is going to be my first game. With a bit of preparation, I’m good to go.”

The IPL’s demanding schedule, with 14 games played over six to seven weeks, poses a unique challenge for players. “It’s got its challenges,” Cummins explained. “You play 14 games in six-seven weeks, plus finals. I’m used to playing a lot of Test cricket, so four overs isn’t as taxing on your body. But it can be mentally taxing to travel, you’re playing a new team every few days you’ve got to prepare for.”

Despite the challenges, Cummins is confident in his team’s abilities. “We have got loads of experienced guys excited with the lineup,” he said. “Bhuvi I will be leaning on a lot. We have got a lot of experience and young guys as well.”

Cummins, who was the second most expensive buy at this year’s IPL auction, will not only have the burden of captaincy but also the pressure to deliver with the ball. He will have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the only other experienced bowler in the line-up, along with T Natarajan and Jaydev Unadkat.

Saturday’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders is being billed as a clash between Cummins and Mitchell Starc, another Australian fast bowler. “Hopefully I don’t have to face Starc,” Cummins joked. “It’s funny beauty of the IPL. These guys playing Starcy for 15 years.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan for a five-match T20I series in April 2024. The Black Caps will arrive in Islamabad on April 14 and play three matches in Rawalpindi from April 18 to 21, followed by two more at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on April 25 and 27.

This tour marks New Zealand’s third visit to Pakistan since December 2022, highlighting the growing camaraderie between the two cricketing nations. The visitors played two Tests and three ODIs in Pakistan at the turn of that year, before returning in April 2023 for a series of ten white-ball games.

The upcoming T20I series will serve as New Zealand’s final international engagement before the T20 World Cup in June. It will also be a crucial part of Pakistan’s preparations for the global event, with the hosts set to play a total of 12 T20Is ahead of the tournament.

However, the series clashes with the Indian Premier League (IPL), which means several of New Zealand’s leading T20 cricketers may be unavailable. Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Trent Boult, Glenn Phillips, and Lockie Ferguson are all contracted by IPL teams this season.

Despite the potential absence of some key players, the PCB is confident that the series will be highly competitive. “This tour symbolises the deep-rooted ties and mutual respect that define the relationship between our two cricketing nations,” said Usman Wahla, the PCB’s director of international cricket.

The series will take place shortly after the holy month of Ramzan and the Eid holidays, with games scheduled to begin at 7pm local time. The final few games of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have necessitated a late start because of Ramzan, taking place at 9pm.
