Shubman Gill smashes double ton vs NZ

Shubman Gill enthrals the Hyderabad crowd with a stunning double ton vs NZ

The first ODI vs New Zealand saw a brilliant double century by Team India opener Shubman Gill. The right-hander scored a blistering knock of 208 runs off 149 balls taking his team to 349/5 in 50 overs.

Tormenting the New Zealand bowling attack in the 1st ODI being played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, Gill became the fifth Indian batter to register an individual score of 200 in the 50-over format. The Indian opener is the youngest batter to score a double century in the history of ODI cricket. The right-hander scored 19 boundaries, and nine hits went over the boundary line.

Shubman Gill also became India’s fastest batter to complete 1,000 ODI runs in the same match. The 23-year-old upstaged Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, who achieved the same feat in 24 innings for Team India. Team India opener Shubman Gill reached the same milestone in his 19th ODI appearance for the Asian giants.

Jim Ratcliffe officially enters the bidding process for Man United- God of Sports

Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS enters the bidding process for Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS, a pharmaceutical firm, has formally entered into the sales process of Premier League club Manchester United. Jim Ratcliffe’s spokesperson confirmed the news and said, “I can confirm that we have formally put ourselves into the process.”

In November, United’s US owners, the Glazer family, said they had begun looking at options for the 20-time English champion, including new investment or a potential club sale. The English club is currently valued at $4.6 billion.

The Glazer family has owned Manchester United since 2005 when late patriarch Malcolm Glazer completed a highly controversial buyout that plunged the club into debt for the first time in more than 70 years.  Their business model saw significant funds taken out of the club as dividends. Despite the losses, no dividends were paid in December 2022 for the first time in six years.

This is not the only time Manchester United has been linked with a new owner. Earlier, India’s billionaire Mukesh Ambani was also reported to be having a significant interest in buying the English club from the Glazers family.

The Old Trafford-located club is currently fourth on the Premier League table with 38 points from 18 games. The club next faces table toppers Arsenal on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

Viacom18 bags the media rights for Women’s IPL

Viacom18 has won the media rights for the inaugural Women’s Indian Premier League for the five-year cycle, i.e. 2023-2027, as informed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. The winning bid by Viacom18 was worth INR 951 crore, which translates to a value of INR 7.09 crore per match for the 2023-27 period. This makes it the second-costliest cricket league in the world.

BCCI president Roger Binny said, “I would like to congratulate Viacom18 for bagging the media rights for Women’s IPL for the period of 5 years.” He further said. “Women’s cricket has been on the up since a few years and the recently concluded bilateral series against Australia is a great testament to how popular women’s cricket has become in India.”

Binny further added, “It was only apt to get our own women’s T20 league and give the fans more of women’s cricket. I would also like to congratulate the BCCI leadership and its workforce for a successful media rights process and wish them the very best for the first edition of the Women’s IPL.”

The inaugural season of the Women’s IPL, tentatively scheduled for March 2023, will feature eight teams who will play in a round-robin format. It is also widely reported that some of the current IPL team owners will be buying franchisees in the Women’s IPL.

The Network18- owned has also secured the digital rights to the Men’s IPL for the same cycle and the ongoing SA20 League in South Africa.

Viktor Axelsen

Viktor Axelsen thrashes Japan’s Kodai Naraoka to clinch the singles title at the Malaysian Open

Danish shuttler Viktor Axelsen successfully defended his singles title at the Malaysian Open 2023 after defeating Japan’s Kodai Naraoka 21-6, 21-15 in two straight games. The world number one needed only 40 minutes to secure the first trophy of the year.

Axelsen started the match with complete aggression, never allowing the opponent to settle. The tactic paid dividends for the Danish badminton player as he won the first game comfortably. Axelsen continued the strategy in the second game too. He kept up the pressure in the second game against a visibly exhausted opponent to clinch the win.

After the win, Axelsen was quoted as saying, “I just tried to play consistently at a high pace, and not give him many chances. If he wanted to win, he had to work really hard.” Axelsen appreciated Naraoka for the way he played in the final. He added, “I did feel tired coming into this game, but I still did my best. But he used his height well, and his smashes were too powerful for me.”

Additionally, Akane Yamaguchi defeated An Se-young to win the women’s singles final. Also, the Indonesian duo of Muhammad Rian Ardianto & Fajar Alfian managed to clinch the men’s doubles finals. The charismatic Chinese pair of Jia Yifan & Chen Qingchen won the women’s doubles. Another Chinese pair, Zheng Siwei & Huang Yaqiong, managed to go past Arisa Higashino & Yuta Watanabe to win the mixed doubles finals.

Joao Felix gets red card on Chelsea debut

Joao Felix gets sent off on Chelsea debut

Chelsea’s latest signing, Joao Felix, was sent off on his debut Premier League game. The striker was awarded a red card following a horrendous tackle on Fulham’s Kenny Tete before the hour mark at Craven Cottage.

Felix has carved out an unwanted piece of history: he becomes the first player to receive a red card on their Premier League debut since Federico Fazio for Tottenham against Manchester City in October 2014. Graham Potter’s Chelsea has been in shambles since the start of the league as the side crashed to a seventh defeat in their last 10 games in all competitions after another spluttering display.

Chelsea fell behind to a goal thanks to ex-Chelsea player Willian’s wonderful goal in the first half. However, the Blues got one back with a stunning strike from Chelsea’s centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly in the early moments of the second half.

Fulham was in luck as they got gifted an easy winner from Vinicius as Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made a disaster while dealing with a cross.

Chelsea, who have a string of injured players, believed Felix could be the solution. And Felix had undoubtedly been impressive in his maiden Chelsea game, with his trick, flicks and clever movement receiving plaudits from pundits and football fans on Twitter alike. But then it all came crashing down.

In the 58th minute, with the ball bouncing loose into the path of Kenny Tete, Felix leapt into a challenge with his studs up and chopped down Fulham’s Kenny Tete.

Felix is one of the costliest loanees in Premier League history. And a three-game ban means he will now miss matches against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and the reverse fixture at home to Fulham. Looks like Chelsea’s disastrous form will continue.

Southampton defeats Man City in EFL Cup

Southampton shock Man City; knocks them out of EFL Cup

Manchester City’s stocks have been on the decline recently. After being 5 points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League, the club has crashed out of the EFL Cup, aka Carabao Cup. The Premier League defending champs lost to Southampton 2-0 thanks to goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo.

Pep Guardiola’s decision to name an under-strength squad for the match backfired massively. There was no chemistry in the playing XI. The second-half substitutes Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ederson also didn’t quite help the cause. The Blues didn’t muster a single shot on target as Pep Guardiola lost a domestic cup quarter-final for the first time in his managerial career.

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse told Sky Sports that his side played without fear and praised new manager Nathan Jones. He said, “[It is] a special night. These games are special to play in especially when you’re struggling in the league. We knew this was a distraction from the league and a great showcase. We showed no fear.”

Southampton will now take on Newcastle United in the semifinals for a chance to meet either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest in the final.

Ronaldo and Messi Playing Football

Ronaldo will square off against Messi in a friendly clash

Lionel Messi’s Paris St. Germain will play a friendly against an all-star team comprising players from Saudi clubs Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal. The match will see Ronaldo and Messi go against each other on January 19 in Riyadh.

Qatar-owned PSG will travel to Doha on January 17 before moving on to the Saudi capital for the match at the King Fahd Stadium, which will see Messi and Ronaldo renew their rivalry. Their rivalry grew over nine years when they came up against each other in Spain when Messi was starring for Barcelona and Ronaldo for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr in a shocking move that saw him become the most expensive player of all time with a deal worth around $200 million per year. While his long-time competitor recently lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy cementing his status as one of the game’s greats.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo hasn’t made his debut for the Saudi club. It is reported the superstar will be available for the friendly game. The game will broadcast live on PSG’s social media platforms for the benefit of fans.

Portuguese club Benfica are under investigation for match fixing
