Udita Duhan, the most expensive female player in the Hockey India League (HIL) auction, is proving her worth at the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy. The 26-year-old defender has guided India to the semi-finals with five consecutive wins, showcasing her versatility and leadership skills.
Duhan’s aggressive style of play has made her a key asset for India. She not only anchors the defense but also creates opportunities for the forwards. In the tournament opener against Malaysia, she scored her first goal since January, leading India to a 3-0 victory. Against Thailand, she assisted Lalremsiami’s goal with a slick pass.
Duhan’s impact was evident against China, the Olympic silver medallists. She mounted multiple attacks on their defense, resulting in three goals. Her ability to create chances for the forwards and her adeptness in both defense and attack have been crucial for India’s success.
“Among Asian teams, we are ahead, but China did really well in the Olympics,” said Duhan ahead of the semi-final against Japan. “Our focus is on Los Angeles 2028. We are building our team for the Olympics and giving youngsters experience.”
Duhan’s journey to becoming the most expensive female player has been marked by hard work and determination. She made her debut in 2017 and has come into her own in the last three years, especially after the retirement of Deep Grace Ekka.
“I was nervous during the auction, but I am happy how it ended,” said Duhan. “I never thought I’d be the costliest player.”
Under coach Harendra Singh, Duhan has flourished. “There is no language barrier now,” she said. “Whatever he wants to communicate comes through to us very easily.”
As a senior player, Duhan feels a sense of responsibility. “It is important for me to take the young players along with the team,” she added.
