Zverev Reaches US Open Quarterfinals, Sets Up Fritz Rematch

Former US Open runner-up Alexander Zverev has once again reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, setting up a rematch of his thrilling Wimbledon clash against Taylor Fritz. Zverev, the fourth seed, defeated Brandon Nakashima of the United States in four sets on Sunday, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Zverev’s victory marked his 450th career win. He served up 14 aces and hit 51 winners past Nakashima, who is ranked 50th in the world. Zverev faced just a single break point throughout the match.

In the quarter-finals, Zverev will face Fritz, the 12th seed from the United States. Fritz came back from two sets down to defeat Zverev in a dramatic fourth-round clash at Wimbledon in July. Zverev suffered a knee injury in that match and claimed he finished the tie “on one leg.”

“Well, the difference now is that I’m healthy,” Zverev said on Sunday. “That was an amazing match. I expect a tough battle – it always is when I face Taylor.”

Zverev has reached the US Open quarter-finals for the fourth time in his career. He lost the 2020 final to Dominic Thiem from two sets up and the 2022 French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, also in five sets.

“I’m doing everything I can, everything else is out of my power,” Zverev said. “I’m trying my best and hopefully it will be enough at some stage in my career.”
