Messi’s Argentina Stumble in Paraguay, Controversy and Defeat Mar Match

Lionel Messi’s Argentina suffered a disappointing 1-2 defeat to Paraguay in Asuncion on Friday, extending their winless streak to three matches. The match was marred by controversy and incidents involving Messi, who confronted the referee and was targeted by Paraguay fans.

In the first half, Paraguayan defender Omar Alderete escaped a second yellow card for a foul on Messi, prompting the Argentina captain to confront referee Anderson Daronco. Messi’s frustration continued when Paraguay fans threw bottles at him as he attempted to take a corner.

Despite the setbacks, Argentina took an early lead through Lautaro Martinez in the 11th minute. However, Paraguay equalized just eight minutes later with a stunning bicycle kick from Antonio Sanabria.

The second half began disastrously for Argentina as Alderete headed in a free-kick to give Paraguay the lead. Messi and his teammates struggled to break down Paraguay’s resolute defense, and the match ended in a disappointing defeat.

After the match, Messi expressed his frustration with the referee’s decision-making. “The referee made a mistake by not giving Alderete a second yellow card,” he said. “It changed the game.”

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged the team’s struggles. “The goal at the start of the second half made everything more difficult,” he said. “We have to congratulate the opponent, who defended very well.”

Alderete later apologized to Messi for the treatment he received from Paraguay fans. “I want to apologize on behalf of my country for the unfortunate incident in which someone threw a bottle at you,” he wrote on Instagram. “You are an idol for millions here and around the world.”

Argentina will look to break their winless streak when they face Peru on November 19. Messi will be determined to lead his team to victory and restore their confidence ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
