Indian shuttler duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty has made history. The duo defeated Malaysian world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the Indonesia Open Super 1000 event to lift the coveted trophy. This was the first time any Indian has won a Super 1000 badminton tournament.
The Indian badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty managed to seal victory by a 21-17, 21-18 margin. The game saw the Indians stuttering at the start, however, they picked up the pace and by the end of the mid-game interval, they were leading 11-9. In contrast, the second game started and the Indians dominated the proceedings. Though the Malaysian pair did come close towards the end, they were unable to withstand the pressure and succumbed to it.
Satwiksairaj Reddy was very ecstatic after the win. In a post-match presentation, he was quoted as saying, “It’s been an amazing week for us. I’m happy with the way we played today and the calm we had because we had never won against them. Our head-to-head against them was very bad. We wanted to do well.”
In other news, Viktor Axelsen defeated Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. The World No. 1 player won in straight games (21-14, 21-13) to win the men’s singles title. While Chen Yufei of China was crowned the women’s singles champion after defeating Spain’s Carolina Marin 18-21, 19-21.
