Hardik Pandya

Is Hardik Pandya Team India’s next white-ball leader?

Team India’s all-rounder cricketer Hardik Pandya is likely to replace Rohit Sharma as the next white ball skipper in ODI and T20I series. According to ANI, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is currently carrying out this transition strategy. The opportunity has reportedly been discussed with Hardik Pandya, and the BCCI is waiting for his response.

The star all-rounder only plays white-ball cricket and has been consistent since his comeback to international cricket in June 2022. Cricketer Hardik proved his potential as a captain by leading Gujarat Titans to an IPL triumph in their debut season and was also in the lead in the competition to become the Indian cricket team’s T20I captain. Now it appears that Pandya could be granted full control of the white-ball teams to become the new captain of the Indian Cricket Team.

Following the 2021 T20 World Cup, Rohit was given leadership of the T20I team and the home series against New Zealand. In December 2021, he succeeded Virat Kohli as the ODI captain. Rohit was the full-time captain for the Men in Blue, but owing to an injury, he was unable to lead the team in his first ODI series against South Africa. Additionally, he was absent for the Bangladesh Test Series.

Rohit took over the Test captaincy in 2022 after Kohli stepped down but was only able to lead the Men in Blue in 2 Test matches due to his fitness issues. Since February 2022, Sharma has been facing injuries. Due to a calf injury, the Indian cricket captain was unable to participate in the ODI and Test series against the Kiwis during their early 2020 visit to New Zealand. The cricketer injured himself while batting in Mount Maunganui’s fifth and final T20I of the series.

After the New Zealand trip, there was an unforeseen respite for the Indian cricket team when COVID-19 caused chaos throughout the world. It was necessary to postpone even the Indian Premier League (IPL). Even when cricket returned many months later, not much had changed for Rohit in terms of his injury problems.

After suffering a hamstring injury, Rohit missed a few IPL 2020 games for the Mumbai Indians (MI) team. He was not included in either of the teams chosen for the Australia tour in October 2020 due to worries about his fitness. India was slated to play four tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is in Australia.

In the elimination rounds, he led MI once again, and in the championship game against the Delhi Capitals (DC), he top-scored with 68 runs in 51 balls. Mumbai went on to win the IPL title, but several supporters and detractors questioned if he would be fit to play in the Test matches in Australia.

High expectations were placed on the Indian captain for the South Africa tour of 2021–2022, following his outstanding performance in the Test series in England during the 2021 trip. Rohit was India’s best scorer in England, hitting 368 runs in four games at an average of 52.57, opening the innings in foreign Tests for the first time.

Unfortunately, the Indian batter’s Test tour of South Africa was cut short after he injured his left hamstring during a nett session in Mumbai. He was replaced in the Test team by Priyank Panchal.

Prior to the start of the Test series, Rohit was selected as the team’s captain for the ODI series. He did not, however, make a quick recovery and also missed the three-match one-day series. In his absence, KL Rahul led the squad as India was defeated 0-3 in the match.

After much uncertainty over his health, the Indian skipper was ultimately permitted to play in the final two Tests of the Australian tour. He performed admirably, earning ratings of 26, 52, 44, and 7. Rohit’s inconsistency in maintaining fitness had forced the BCCI to seek a replacement in the leadership.

After helping the Gujarat Titans win the IPL for the first time in 2022, Hardik’s reputation as a captain improved. India’s current captain, Rohit Sharma, has an outstanding track record in international T20 games. Although he has never lost a series while leading India, the team’s failure to claim the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup has cast doubt on his track record.

Let’s look at Hardik Pandya’s track record in the Indian Premier League

Hardik has displayed his extravagant stroke play throughout his IPL career and has amused himself by dismantling bowling attacks. He has defeated the finest bowlers in the past to establish his dominance in the IPL arena, proving that he is capable of defeating even them when on form. Cricketer Hardik has also played the ball flawlessly, giving his team important breakthroughs.

Hardik, though, struggled to settle in the lucrative T20 competition. The right-handed hitter had a few memorable hits in his first IPL season, but he was quite erratic overall, scoring just 112 runs in nine games. He then had a disastrous 2016 season with the bat, scoring only 44 runs in 11 games. Furthermore, in his first two editions, he also struggled to make an impression with the ball.

The Mumbai Indians supported Hardik and showed faith in him despite his setbacks in the 10th Indian Premier League. The Indian all-rounder earned the team’s trust by putting on a performance at the plate. In 17 games, he scored 250 runs at an astounding strike rate of 156.25, including 20 maximums. Additionally, he claimed six wickets for an 8.19 economy. Pandya’s accomplishments helped Mumbai win the trophy that particular year.

SS Ton Cricket Bat

Later, in the 2018 campaign, Hardik’s all-around prowess caused a stir in the premier competition. He played in 13 games and scored 260 runs with a 133.33 strike rate. The flashy bowler had an economy rate of 8.92 while taking 18 wickets in those matches.

Hardik became a force in the 2019 IPL and was a key figure in Mumbai’s fourth title victory. In 16 games, he scored 402 runs at a mind-blowing strike rate of 191.42, including a scorching 91-run knock off just 34 balls against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 47th round of the league. He completely destroyed every bowling attack that came his way. The talented all-rounder also had a brilliant bowling performance, taking 14 wickets with an economy of 9.17.

Pandya continued his stellar play with the Mumbai franchise in the 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 281 runs in 14 matches at an incredible strike rate of 178.98. However, he did not bowl because of a back problem. The great all-rounder was once again utilised as a real batter the next season to help him control his workload, but he performed only passably, scoring 127 runs in 12 games with a strike rate of 113.3.

Cricketer Hardik Pandya played a key role in Mumbai’s triumph in the T20 tournament. However, the five-time IPL champions also featured elite athletes like Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rohit Sharma in their ranks. The team administration chose the foursome instead of keeping Pandya for the 2022 season due to concerns about his fitness.

The Gujarat Titans made Hardik their top draught choice and gave him control of the team before the 2022 mega auction. Gujarat’s ruse sparked a lot of questions because the Indian all-rounder has no prior experience leading a team on a major stage. But what happened next was really something.

Is Hardik Pandya the next MS Dhoni?

Gujarat won the IPL in their first season because of Hardik’s outstanding leadership abilities. With 487 runs in 15 matches at an economy of 131.27, he finished the main event as GT’s leading run-getter thanks to his exceptional batting. Additionally, he filled in as the sixth bowler when necessary and contributed eight wickets at an economy of 7.28, including a remarkable three-wicket haul in the championship match against the Rajasthan Royals.

The Indian Premier League is now Hardik’s happy hunting ground because of his amazing achievements. The legendary all-rounder has left his mark on history several times during the course of his illustrious IPL career with his feats on the cricket field.

Pandya had already been selected as the captain of the Indian team that travelled to Ireland to play two T20Is. The series was won 2-0 by India. The following T20I series between India and the West Indies, which India won 4-1, saw cricketer Pandya appointed vice-captain.

Pandya, who appeared in 27 T20 matches and amassed 607 runs in 25 innings at an average of 33.72, with three half-centuries and the top individual score of 71*, has been in exceptional form last year. Additionally, he has taken 20 wickets in the 20-over format this year. Pandya has scored 100 runs in two innings in three One-Day Internationals this year, with a high score of 71*. Additionally, he has six wickets this year in the 50-over format.

Rohit’s withering form and Hardik Pandya’s meteoric rise in the shortest format of white ball cricket is reason enough for the BCCI to appoint Pandya as the new white ball leader for Team India.

Partnering with the RCB skipper will be the Orange Cap holder Shubman Gill. Gill is in tremendous form. It is best ever IPL season yet. Gill has amassed 851 runs in 16 innings at an average of 60.79 and a strike rate of 156.43. Gill has terrorised the bowlers with his elegant strokeplay. He has scored 3 massive hundreds this season. Middle Order: Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Rinku Singh

IPL Stars: Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Rinku Singh

The middle order of the best-playing XI of IPL 2023 is filled with superstars and emerging stars. First on the list is IPL veteran Virat Kohli. After showing signs of form, Virat Kohli exploded in the 16th edition of IPL. Kohli was third on the Orange Cap list, scoring 639 runs in 14 innings. “King Kohli” scored 2 big hundreds in this edition of IPL that helped take his team to victory in crucial matches.

Next is World No. 1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav. Surya didn’t quite set the stage on fire. In the first five matches, Suryakumar Yadav scored just 66 runs. However, the Mumbai Indians batter turned the tournament on its head. In the next seven matches, Surya scored 539 runs at a jaw-breaking strike rate of 181.14. Surya’s unconventional yet effective shots were a highlight of IPL 2023. His six over third man off Mohammad Shami’s ball is a shot etched in the memory of the fans. In IPL 2023, Suryakumar Yadav scored 605 runs in 16 innings at an average of 43.21. The right-hander scored one hundred against Gujarat Titans in the league stage.

When it comes to the choice of a wicketkeeper, no one beats the impact Heinrich Klaasen had, no matter where SRH finished this season. The South African was the biggest performer for his franchise, with no other player coming even close. Klassen scored 448 runs in 12 innings at an excellent strike rate of 177.07. The right-hander also smashed a wonderful century against Royal Challengers Bangalore to take his team to a respectable score.

Kolkata Knight Rider’s only glimmer of hope in an otherwise disappointing season; Rinku Singh also makes the list. After showing signs of brilliance last season, Rinku Singh got a consistent run of games in IPL 2023. The left-handed basher smacked 474 runs in 14 innings at an average of 59.52 and a strike rate of 139.52. Playing the role of a finisher, Rinku played his role to perfection. The match where he smashed 30 runs off Yash Dayal’s last over is the stuff of legends.

All-rounders: Hardik Pandya (C), Rashid Khan

IPL Stars: Hardik Pandya (C), Rashid Khan

Although Hardik Pandya the all-rounder hasn’t been able to repeat his remarkable IPL 2022 form, Hardik Pandya’s leadership skills were on point. The current Team India T20I skipper won 10 matches out of 14 games to top the Indian Premier League 2023 table. The all-rounder has kept things simple and not experimented during crunch situations. The Gujarat Titans skipper has scored 325 runs in 15 innings. In bowling, he has been off-colour. The all-rounder could only take 3 wickets whilst going for 8.91 runs per over.

Another Gujarat Titans player, Rashid Khan makes the list. Afghanistan’s current T20I skipper Rashid Khan is second on the Purple Cap list. The mystery spinner has taken 27 wickets in 16 innings. Rashid has also contributed with the bat whenever presented with an opportunity. During their league stage match against Mumbai Indians, the swashbuckling batter threatened to take take the match away from Mumbai with a whirlwind of an innings.

Bowlers: Mohammad Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Matheesha Pathirana

Mohammad Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Matheesha Pathirana

Sitting at the top of the Purple Cap list, Mohammad Shami has been in tremendous form for the Gujarat Titans this season. The right-arm pacer has taken wickets at every stage of the game. Be it powerplay or death overs, Mohammad Shami has delivered his best for the team. The pacer has taken 28 wickets in 16 games at an average of 17.60 and an economy rate of 7.90.

IPL’s highest wicket-taker, Yuzvendra Chahal was also in excellent form this season. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, the leg-spinner took 21 scalps in just 14 games to become the highest wicket-taker for his side in IPL 2023. With a best of 4 for 17 runs, Chahal was very economical throughout the season.

Matheesha Pathirana has been the “find of the season”. The Sri Lankan’s deadly and accurate yorkers have been unplayable in the death overs. Taking 17 wickets in just 11 innings, Pathirana average 19.23 runs per wicket and has an economy of 7.72 runs per over.

Special Mention: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Piyush Chawla, David Warner, Mohit Sharma

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Piyush Chawla, David Warner, Mohit Sharma

Mumbai-born Yashasvi Jaiswal brought his domestic form into IPL 2023. The left-hander smacked 625 runs in just 14 innings at a fantastic strike rate of 163.61. Jaiswal was breathing fire in this edition of the IPL. During a match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, he set a new record by scoring the fastest 50 in IPL history, achieving this feat in just 13 balls.

Piyush Chawla, the old willy spinner from Uttar Pradesh, reinvented himself in this season of IPL. Playing for Mumbai Indians, the leg-spinner took 22 wickets in 15 games. Be it powerplay or middle overs, Chawla took wickets consistently. He never allowed the opposition to get settled, outfoxing the batters with his googlies. Being the highest wicket-taker for his side, Chawla was the fourth-highest wicket-taker this season.

Delhi Capitals had a disappointing season. The team could only bag 10 points in the entire tournament and was the first team to get eliminated from the playoffs stage. However, their skipper David Warner performed exceptionally. In 14 innings, the southpaw amassed 516 runs at an average of 36.86 and a strike rate of 131.63.

Mohit Sharma last played an IPL game in IPL 2019 before this season. He was playing for Chennai Super Kings and couldn’t impress the management and MS Dhoni. He was then overlooked by all the franchises. But Gujarat Titans called him as a net bowler in IPL 2022 and he immediately left an indelible impression on Head Coach Ashish Nehra and skipper Hardik Pandya. Mohit Sharma repaid their faith in IPL 2023. The right-arm pacer took 27 wickets in 14 games at an average of 13.37. Sharma was second on the list of Purple Cap, behind his Gujarat Titans teammate Mohammad Shami.

Coming to the match, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to field. Despite the tough bowling conditions, Chennai’s bowlers found it hard to break through Gujarat’s batting order. Tamil Nadu-born Sai Sudharshan was the highest score for the defending champions; scoring 96 runs off 47 balls. Sudharshan’s clever batting enabled Gujarat Titans to breach the 200-run mark.

The second innings was marred with rain. After a couple of hours of rain intermission, play began with revised conditions. Chennai Super Kings needed 171 runs off 15 overs. Although CSK were on track, they lost wickets on regular intervals. However, Shivam Dube; who’s been a totally different player this season found able partners in Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja to win the game for his team.

Ravindra Jadeja who hit the winning runs was seen celebrating in front of his home crowd. In a post-match interview, he stated, “Feeling amazing winning fifth title in front of my home crowd. They’ve come in big numbers to support CSK. This crowd has been amazing. They were waiting for rain to stop till late night. Want to say big congratulations to CSK fans. Want to dedicate this win to one of the special members of our team – MS Dhoni.”

Losing skipper Hardik Pandya was full of praise for his team. He said, ” I think we tick a lot of boxes as a team. We play with a lot of heart, really proud of the way we kept fighting. We have a motto – we win together, we lose together. I’m not going to make excuses, CSK played the better cricket.”

The 16th edition of IPL has truly been a remarkable one. While Shubman Gill (890 runs) won the Orange Cap, his teammate Mohammad Shami (28 wickets) took home the Purple Cap. Young batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal won the Emerging Player of the Tournament. The left-hander made 625 runs at a strike rate of 164. Rashid Khan won the award for Catch of the Season, for his catch of Kyle Mayers in the GT vs LSG game. In addition, Delhi Capitals won the Fairplay Award.

That’s it for this edition of IPL. Which was your favourite moment from this season? Drop your answers in the comment box.

The 28-year-old all-rounder played a crucial role with both bat and ball, showcasing his exceptional skills to guide his team to victory. He has played a crucial role in Mumbai’s IPL success, lifting the trophy with them in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Kieron Pollard was a seasoned campaigner in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having won five championships with the Mumbai Indians and two more in the Champions League. He is considered one of the most valuable players in the league due to his all-around abilities as a hard-hitting batsman and a reliable medium-fast bowler. With 3915 runs to his name in both the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League T20, Pollard is the second-highest run-scorer for the Mumbai Indians. Only Rohit Sharma, the current captain of the team, has scored more runs for the franchise. Pollard’s contribution to the team’s success has been immense, both on and off the field, as he remained a vital cog in their quest for more IPL glory.

When it comes to hitting sixes, Kieron Pollard is in a league of his own as far as Mumbai Indians are concerned. He leads the charts for the most sixes hit by any MI player, having smashed 223 of them in his IPL career. His captain, Rohit Sharma, is a distant second with 189 sixes to his name. Pollard’s impact on the team’s batting is further highlighted by his impressive strike rate of 147.32, which is the second-highest for any MI player (minimum 300 balls faced). Only Hardik Pandya has a better strike rate than Pollard, with a staggering 153.91. Pollard’s power-hitting abilities and ability to accelerate the scoring rate made him a force to be reckoned with in any format of the game, and he proved to be a game-changer for the Mumbai Indians on numerous occasions.

Kieron Pollard’s batting prowess was not limited to hitting sixes and maintaining a high strike rate. He made significant contributions with the bat for Mumbai Indians, including memorable innings in the IPL where he recorded the second-fastest fifty for the team. In a match against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2016, Pollard reached the fifty-run mark in just 17 balls, which is the second-fastest for any Mumbai Indians player. The record for the fastest fifty for MI, however, belongs to Ishan Kishan, who achieved the feat in just 16 balls. Although he made an impressive start, claiming three wickets in his debut match, he only played one more game that season. In 2015, he featured in only four matches, taking three wickets. However, in the last three seasons where MI emerged victorious, Bumrah played a crucial role. He was instrumental in their triumph in 2017, 2019, and 2020, claiming 20, 19, and 27 wickets respectively. His ability to bowl with pace, accuracy, and variations has made him a potent weapon in Mumbai’s bowling attack. Bumrah’s contributions have been vital in Mumbai’s success in the IPL, and he has established himself as one of the premier fast bowlers in world cricket.

In the 2019 final against Chennai Super Kings, he was awarded the Player of the Final for his sensational figures of 2 wickets for just 14 runs, helping MI clinch another one-run win. Although he went wicketless in the 2020 final against Delhi Capitals, he conceded only 28 runs in his four overs, putting up a fantastic show with his impeccable accuracy and variations. Bumrah’s ability to deliver under pressure and his exceptional skillset make him a valuable asset to the Mumbai Indians, and one of the top bowlers in the IPL.

Ambati Rayudu (5 times)

Ambati Rayudu has achieved the feat of winning the IPL with both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Rayudu has been a part of the Mumbai squad that clinched the trophy thrice in 2013, 2015, and 2017, and also played a crucial role in CSK’s title-winning campaigns in 2018 and 2021. In the 2013 final against CSK, Rayudu played a vital inning of 37, while his unbeaten 36 off 24 balls in the 2015 summit clash against the same opponents helped MI lift their second IPL trophy. Rayudu’s consistent performances with both bat and gloves have made him a critical part of any team he plays for, and his success with two different franchises is a testament to his skill and adaptability.

Team India loses first ODI bilateral series at home since 2019

Team India has had a really disastrous end to their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations. The World No.1 T20 team has lost 2-1 to Australia in the recently conducted home series. With this series defeat, the Men in Blue has lost an ODI series at home since 2019.

The 3rd ODI between India and Australia happening in Chennai saw Australia post 269 after winning the toss. Team India failed to chase the target despite a fifty from Virat Kohli and a fighting 40 from Hardik Pandya. Rohit Sharma, who looked dejected after the series loss, stated, “A lot of takeaways (from the series), just not look at these 3 games. The 9 ODIs we played from January, we can take a lot of positives from that. A loss like that really hurts. But again, we can understand what we need to do better as a group.”

He further added, “It’s not about going out there and pin-pointing at one or two individuals. It’s not what I do or it’s not what the team does as well. It’s a collective failure that we need to look at and reflect. We have to understand that in 5 months time, we will be playing on these kind of conditions. We need to understand the ideas and the thoughts.”

The 3-match series saw Team India win the first match comfortably by 5 wickets. In the 2nd ODI, the Men in Blue had a dismal batting performance. The Indians were all out to 117 runs which the Australians easily chased down and leveled the series.

With this effort, Australia has become the new number-one ODI team in the ICC Rankings. Currently, the Australians have occupied the number one Test team spot in the ICC Rankings.
