Dhoni to be Treated as 'Uncapped' Player in IPL 2025

Just a flick of wrist? Decoding MS Dhoni’s Helicopter Shot

I remember watching Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s early rushes and what he was capable in the iconic innings against Pakistan in the 2005 ODI series at Vishakhapatnam. The wicket-keeper batsman coming at Number 3, smashed 143 runs off just 132 balls that included 15 boundaries and 4 maximums.

Although India lost the series, Team India got a swashbuckling wicket-keeper batter who can smash sixes for fun with his unique and somewhat unrealistic shots. One of Dhoni’s unorthodox shots that got popular is the helicopter shot.

The former 2011 ODI World Cup-winning captain gave everyone a glimpse of his helicopter shot in the 2005 ODI series against Pakistan.

But what is this helicopter shot that is now played often by international superstars including Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan? Let’s have a look.

Decoding MS Dhoni’s widely popular Helicopter Shot

What is a Helicopter shot?

A helicopter shot is characterized by a rapid flick of the wrists, which generates a whip-like action, imparting a tremendous focus on the ball. This shot is played to the deliveries which are often in the slot or yorker.

As per the film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, the unorthodox shot was taught to Dhoni by his good friend Santosh Lal when he used to play tennis ball cricket tournaments.

Although popularized by Dhoni, the cricket shot was first played by Team India cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin in a match against the South Africans at Eden Gardens. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar was also spotted playing the unorthodox shot in a few cricket matches. Other cricketers who have previously played the shot include Aravinda de Silva, Kevin Pietersen, Chamara Silva and Abdul Razzaq.

The science behind the helicopter shot

Growing up many of you must have tried to replicate the helicopter shot. But what’s the science behind perfecting a helicopter shot? Let’s find out.

When to play the helicopter shot?

The helicopter shot, perfected by MS Dhoni, can be played to deliveries that are trying to york the batter. Or the deliveries that are in the slot can also be hit using the helicopter shot.

The effectiveness of the Helicopter Shot is its unpredictability and the way it helps a batter counter one of the hardest deliveries – the yorkers. Bowlers aim to deny the batters any room but Dhoni’s helicopter shot allows him to score runs with ease.

How to play the helicopter shot?

To play a helicopter shot like Dhoni, your stance and footwork is the most important. Dhoni’s stance is slightly open with his feet and shoulder width apart. As the bowler approaches, he takes his front foot forward keeping his back foot anchored to the ground. This allows him to generate power and momentum for the shot.

When the ball is delivered in the slot, Dhoni’s bat slightly points towards the leg side. As the ball approaches he adjusts the bat angle properly to meet the ball at the perfect middle spot. This generates more power and control on the shot.

How does Dhoni generate power while hitting the helicopter shot?

MS Dhoni is a bottom-hand player. He generates power through his rapid bat speed and strong bottom hand. Dhoni’s wrists are strong, allowing him to generate rapid rotation and torque.

While playing the helicopter shot, he will turn his bat downwards the ball and then with a flash hit the ball in the air. This ensures the cricket ball flies quickly and he gets the elevation he wants.

After hitting the ball, Dhoni’s bat goes through a follow-through in a circular motion. Dhoni’s bat follows the trajectory of the ball, maintaining contact for a fraction of a second longer than usual. This ensures that the ball is hit with maximum power and speed.

Why is the helicopter shot effective?

The effectiveness of the Helicopter Shot is its unpredictability and the way it helps a batter counter one of the hardest deliveries – the yorkers. Bowlers aim to deny the batters any room but Dhoni’s helicopter shot allows him to score runs with ease. MSD’s strong wrists and quick rotation of the bat enable him to clear the boundaries with ease.

It is a highly effective weapon in Dhoni’s arsenal especially in death overs as boundaries at that stage are crucial.

So, all the “Thala” fans cruise along. Let’s perfect MSD’s “helicopter shot” and hit those Yorkers out of the park.

The celebration of this significant achievement included a joyful recreation of cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s iconic trophy lift, as players D Gukesh and Tania Sachdev emulated Sharma’s famous walk from the T20 World Cup.

On September 22, 2024, both teams secured their victories, with the men’s team defeating Slovenia and the women’s team triumphing over Azerbaijan with a score of 3.5-0.5. This accomplishment marks a milestone in India’s chess history, elevating the nation as a rising chess powerhouse.

During the celebration, Gukesh and Sachdev emerged from opposite sides of the podium, mimicking Rohit Sharma’s celebrated walk. Their lighthearted tribute sparked excitement and quickly went viral on social media.

D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi were standout performers, achieving significant wins that led to India’s first gold medal victories in the competition. The women’s team featured exceptional contributions from players like D Harika and Divya Deshmukh, further cementing their triumph.

Bangladesh Faces Penalty for Overs Shortage in India Test

Bangladesh inches away from being punished by ICC

Bangladesh are in danger of losing more points in their ICC world test points as they were found 10 over short of the 90 over target on day 1 even after a half-hour extension.

Bangladesh could only bowl 11 overs in the first hour of play which was dominated by their three seamers. And in the first session they only bowled 23 overs.

Even though they tried to improve their margin in the later session, they couldn’t quite make it there. And this poor rate was described as unacceptable by the commentators.

“Bangladesh’s overrate has been unacceptable. We’re 45 minutes into Tea and we’re not even through to 60 overs here. The best that Bangladesh can achieve at this rate is about 70-72 overs (at the end of the day) and that has to be unacceptable. Wonder when the umpires start playing a more active role here to get things moving,” said Harsha Bhogle in commentary.

Bangladesh had lost a few points already for slow over rate against Pakistan and if they continue the same they in danger of losing even more along the course of play.

R. Ashwin's Century at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium: A Testament to His Love for the Ground

1st time in over a century record for Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin earlier before the start of the test series had said he wants to have the record of six sixes in an over.

But in the pursuit he happens to set the world record, a record that hasn’t been touched in over a century.

Ashwin becomes the first ever cricketer in history to score 20+ fifty and 30+ five-wicket haul in the red ball cricket. Becomes the first in the 147-year history of test cricket.

During the first day of play, Ashwin and Jadeja played a saviour knock as they put up a partnership of 195 runs which put India on a steady position.

Bangladesh chose to bowl first and gained momentum as the Indian top order collapsed and India was left at 34/3, Jaiswal and Pant put together a 62-run partnership to give India a boost.

India were 144/6 when Ashwin and Jadeja put up a partnership that helped India to end their day at 339/6.

Now as day 2 awaits let’s see how our batters and bowlers go about the task in front of them.

Indian Women's Cricket Team Aims for Composure in T20 World Cup

Historic Milestone: Lord’s to Host Its First-Ever Women’s Test Match Between India and England

The “home of cricket,” Lord’s, has announced that it will host the first-ever women’s Test match between India and England in 2026. This is a historic development for women’s cricket. The exciting three-match ODI series in July 2025 will set the stage for this historic fixture, which has been confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Excitement was evident in the words of ECB CEO Richard Gould, who said, “It will be a truly special occasion, and one of real significance for the game.” The game intends to motivate the following generation of female cricket players in addition to showcasing the sport’s rising popularity.

Traditionally a privilege for their male counterparts, female cricket players will now be allowed to enter the hallowed grounds of Lord’s for the first time during a Test match. The game will serve as a stage for exhibiting skill and fostering interest in women’s cricket, which has been increasingly popular in recent times.

The forthcoming Test match between India and England, where England has historically dominated the women’s game, promises to provide thrilling performances and increased rivalry. India last faced England in a Test match in 2021, which resulted in a draw. Since 1986, India has played nine Tests against England. This next match aims to push women’s cricket to new heights while also representing advancements in gender equality within the game.

Cricket enthusiasts and aspiring players are preparing for a historic match at Lord’s that will open the door for many more women’s matches at this legendary location as excitement for 2026 grows. A significant turning point in cricket history is about to occur, reinforcing the idea that the sport is open to everybody.

BCCI set to announce squad for West Indies Tour; Pujara to be dropped from Test team

BCCI set to announce squad for West Indies Tour; Pujara to be dropped from Test team

After the embarrassing loss in the World Test Championship final, it is believed that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) will be bringing major changes to the Test squad. As reported by Cricbuzz, only a couple of players are set to be rested or dropped, and importantly, Rohit Sharma is set to continue as India’s Test captain in the foreseeable future.

As per the report, four out of the top five batsmen retain their place in the batting lineup. Rohit, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane are certain to retain their places in the squad for the two Test matches in West Indies, but a question mark hangs over Cheteshwar Pujara, who is plagued with a drop in form.

Cheteshwar Pujara has been Team India’s wall in the red-ball format for over a decade. But lately, the right-hander has witnessed a dip in form. The Saurashtra-based batsman has scored only one century in 52 innings (28 Tests) since 2020 at a disappointing average of 29.69. While he has registered 11 half-centuries, his average further drops to 26.31 when his scores of 90 and 102* in the Chittagong Test in December 2022 are excluded.

Pujara’s shot selection and his strike rate have garnered a lot of criticism with many former cricketers believing the right-hander needs to call it a time from the Test format.

In addition, Mohammad Shami who has been in exceptional touch will be rested for the Test series. The veteran fast bowler may return for the ODIs that follow the two Tests in view of the World Cup later this year. Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik who have impressed everyone with their talent will likely be included in the 2 Test series.

KS Bharat, who showed exceptional skills behind the stumps will retain his position in the squad. Additionally, Ishan Kishan will also be included in the Test squad as a backup keeper.

Late food delivery incident during South Africa vs Bangladesh Test in 2017

In Test match cricket, fans eagerly anticipate the moment when teams emerge from the pavilion after lunch and tea breaks. However, an unusual occurrence disrupted the usual proceedings during the second Test match between South Africa and Bangladesh at Bloemfontein in 2017. On day one of the match, the start of play was delayed as one of the teams had to wait for their food to arrive. This unexpected situation resulted in an international match being postponed until the necessary arrangements could be made. The incident served as a reminder that even the most meticulously planned events can encounter unforeseen obstacles, much to the disappointment of fervent fans eagerly awaiting the resumption of play.

During the lunch break, the Bangladesh team encountered a minor delay as their food arrived 10 minutes later than the scheduled time. However, an interesting twist emerged when it was discovered that the delay was a result of a print error in the food menu, which led to the team receiving halal food. The incident gained significant media attention, with pictures of the delivered food being released and circulated widely. This unexpected turn of events sparked curiosity and discussions among cricket enthusiasts and the general public alike, highlighting the intricacies involved in catering to diverse dietary requirements during international sporting events.

This particular match will be etched in the memories of both teams, as it witnessed an extraordinary display of batting prowess by four South African players who each scored centuries in the first innings. Additionally, the star pacemaker Kagiso Rabada showcased his exceptional skills by claiming five wickets in both innings, ultimately leading the home team to a resounding victory by an innings and a remarkable margin of 254 runs. This remarkable performance by the South African team left an indelible mark on the match and served as a testament to their dominance and collective brilliance on the cricket field.

Burnt gravy at Old Trafford

During an enthralling match in 2007 at Old Trafford in Manchester, Lancashire, and Kent were engaged in a captivating battle. As Lancashire approached an imminent victory, the unexpected occurred – fire alarms abruptly sounded, bringing the game to a sudden halt.

The interruption due to the fire alarms disrupted the intense atmosphere and added a unique twist to the proceedings. Both teams and spectators were momentarily taken aback as they awaited further instructions and eagerly anticipated the resumption of play. This unforeseen incident served as a reminder that even amidst the excitement of cricket, unpredictable circumstances can momentarily overshadow the game’s progress.

Following the activation of the fire alarms, the pavilion was swiftly and completely evacuated, ensuring the safety of all present. The fire brigade promptly arrived at the scene, instilling a sense of urgency and anticipation among the onlookers. With bated breath, everyone prepared themselves for the possibility of witnessing the pavilion engulfed in flames. However, much to everyone’s relief, the situation turned out to be a complete anti-climax. The feared spectacle of a blazing pavilion did not materialize, leaving the incident to be more of an unexpected disruption rather than a disastrous event. Nonetheless, the temporary suspension of play and the evacuation process created a memorable and unique moment in the course of the match.

The surprising cause of the fire was traced back to a group of amateur cooks who had unintentionally overcooked a particular dish. Their culinary endeavor had taken an unfortunate turn, resulting in the dish being burnt to such an extent that it emitted smoke, triggering the fire alarms and setting them into action. The peculiar incident highlighted the consequences of culinary mishaps and served as a reminder of the importance of caution and precision in the kitchen. While the situation may have initially caused alarm and disruption, the underlying cause of the fire brought a touch of irony and even a sense of humor to the otherwise intense cricket match at hand.

While cricket is known for its captivating moments, incidents involving burnt food leading to a disruption in play are a rarity. However, in 2007, such an extraordinary event occurred that left the hopes of play momentarily reduced to ashes. The unexpected mishap, caused by burnt food, brought an intriguing twist to the proceedings, showcasing the unpredictability and diverse range of incidents that can influence the course of a cricket match. This unique occurrence served as a reminder that even the most unconventional factors can unexpectedly impact the game, creating a memorable and unusual chapter in the annals of cricket history.

India’s Baggage Delay Causes Match Delay in 2nd T20I Against West Indies in August 2022

In a recent incident in international cricket, the commencement of a match faced an unexpected delay due to the late arrival of baggage for the visiting team. This unforeseen occurrence unfolded moments before India’s second T20I match against West Indies at Warner Park in St Kitts on August 2. The untimely arrival of the baggage disrupted the scheduled proceedings, causing a temporary halt in the match’s start. This incident serves as a reminder that even meticulous planning can encounter unforeseen obstacles, impacting the smooth execution of highly anticipated cricket encounters.

A significant delay of three hours occurred at the start of the match, attributed to the crucial luggage of Team India being delayed. Cricket West Indies issued a statement explaining that the delay was a result of circumstances beyond their control, with team luggage experiencing considerable delays in transportation from Trinidad to St. Kitts. It was an unfortunate occurrence that affected the timely commencement of the match. Before this incident, India had emerged victorious in the first match of the series, securing a commanding 68-run win at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad and taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

A parallel situation occurred back in 1986 when Australia’s ODI match against India in Jamshedpur had to be postponed for similar reasons. Fast forward to the present, both India and West Indies are currently facing visa complications for their upcoming travel to the USA. These visa issues have arisen just before the last two T20I matches, originally slated to be held in Florida on August 6 and 7. This unforeseen setback has created uncertainties and challenges for the teams, potentially impacting the smooth execution of the matches. The situation serves as a reminder of the intricate logistical arrangements and administrative hurdles involved in international cricket tournaments.

A car stops play in Delhi

During a Ranji Trophy match at the Palam Air Force Ground in 2017, Delhi faced off against Uttar Pradesh in an eagerly anticipated contest. The match showcased a star-studded lineup, including renowned players such as Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Suresh Raina. However, the third day of the game took an unexpected turn when a car managed to breach all security measures and made its way onto the field, leaving everyone astonished.

Due to a direct connection between a stadium gate and the main road, coupled with the absence of personnel at their designated posts, a driver found an open pathway to freely enter the ground. Exploiting this lapse in security, the car effortlessly made its way onto the field, surprising everyone present. In an audacious display, the vehicle even managed to complete two laps around the pitch before its impromptu escapade was abruptly halted.

Upon the car’s intrusion, the officials swiftly took action to block the driver’s potential escape routes, effectively sealing off any possible exit points. Subsequently, the intruder was apprehended and handed over to the police. Despite the driver’s claim of panic and insisting it was an honest mistake, the incident stands out as one of the most extraordinary reasons for a cricket match to be interrupted.

Cricket Match Temporarily Halted as Nathan Lyon Accidentally Burns Toast in 2017

A momentary interruption occurred during a live match, courtesy of Australian bowling sensation Nathan Lyon, renowned for his impressive tally of 482 Test wickets. In a rather amusing turn of events, Lyon inadvertently caused a slight halt when he left a toaster unattended, triggering the fire alarms and prompting the arrival of the fire brigade. The incident showcased that even highly skilled athletes can have unexpected mishaps off the field, adding a touch of lightheartedness to the intensity of the match. Lyon’s accidental toaster mishap momentarily shifted the focus from the cricket action to the comical side of the players’ lives, creating a memorable and light-hearted interlude amid the game.

The incident unfolded during the Sheffield Shield clash between New South Wales and Queensland in Brisbane back in 2017. Nathan Lyon, representing New South Wales, found himself engrossed in the game as his team was on the verge of victory. Amid the excitement, Lyon decided to make himself a toast, only to become so captivated by the unfolding events on the field that he inadvertently left the toaster unattended. Unbeknownst to him, this momentary distraction led to the fire alarms being triggered. Lyon’s unintentional act of toast-making turned into a light-hearted anecdote, highlighting the passionate involvement of players in the game and their ability to become fully absorbed in the proceedings. The incident added a touch of humor and relatability, reminding us that even professional athletes can get caught up in the excitement of their performances.

“(The toast) popped up first, and I wasn’t satisfied, so I decided to put it back down. However, I got completely engrossed in watching the cricket,” Lyon later explained, shedding light on the amusing sequence of events. Despite the momentary distraction, New South Wales emerged victorious in the match, showcasing their resilience and skill. Lyon himself played a pivotal role, contributing with three wickets in the first innings. The incident served as a lighthearted reminder of the players’ human tendencies and their ability to get absorbed in their passion for the game, even at the expense of minor culinary mishaps. Ultimately, it was a memorable moment that added an amusing touch to the team’s triumph.

Sun’s Brightness Halts India vs New Zealand ODI Match in 2019

While rain and bad light often frustrate cricket fans by interrupting thrilling matches, an unexpected twist took place in 2019. During an ODI cricket match between India and New Zealand in Napier, the game came to a surprising halt due to the excessive brightness of the sun. Despite officials’ helplessness in controlling natural elements, the match had to be paused as the sun’s intense radiance posed challenges for the players. This rare occurrence left both spectators and players taken aback, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sport and the influence of external factors on its proceedings.

During India’s batting innings at Napier, an incident unfolded involving opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan. In the 11th over, Dhawan struggled to pick up the delivery from New Zealand bowler Lockie Ferguson due to the intense brightness of the sun. The harsh glare proved to be a challenging and unpleasant experience for the batter. Concerned about the safety and fairness of the game, Dhawan engaged in a brief conversation with the on-field umpires. As a result, the match was temporarily suspended until the brightness of the sun diminished, allowing for better visibility and a level playing field for both teams. This episode highlighted the impact of natural elements on cricket matches and the importance of ensuring optimal conditions for all players involved.

This unforeseen incident at Napier was a result of the unique geographical alignment of the ground, which runs from east to west. This alignment posed a challenge for batters during sunset, making it difficult for them to face fast bowlers effectively. The intense glare of the sun during this time created unfavorable conditions for the batsmen, affecting their visibility and ability to read the bowlers’ deliveries accurately. Interestingly, a similar occurrence had taken place previously at Napier during a Super Smash Twenty20 match between Central Stags and Canterbury Kings. These instances shed light on the significance of geographical factors and how they can impact the dynamics of cricket matches, emphasizing the need for adaptable strategies and considerations for varying playing conditions.

Kandy Bee Attack

During a cricket match in 1981, bees caused quite a stir by leaving several cricketers and officials injured. The incident became infamous and raised concerns about bee-related disruptions during games. Fast forward 26 years later, and history repeated itself in another cricket match. This time, England was facing Sri Lanka in Kandy when a sudden swarm of bees descended upon the stadium, catching everyone off guard. The players, filled with a mixture of fear and awe, found themselves completely bewildered, unsure of how to handle the situation.

In a remarkable display of quick thinking, the umpire demonstrated his presence of mind by promptly lying flat on the ground to protect himself from the impending bee attack. Witnessing this action, the players swiftly followed suit, taking a prone position on the field, their stomachs pressed against the ground until the bees ceased their disruptive presence. The unexpected intrusion resulted in a significant halt in the game, as play remained suspended until the umpires deemed it safe to resume. Undoubtedly, this incident stands as one of the most astonishing causes of a temporary stoppage in cricket history.

BCCI Central Contracts: Richa Ghosh, Jemimah get promoted; Shikha Pandey dropped

Team India’s young batting sensation Richa Ghosh has been rewarded for her tremendous performances in the recent past. The right-hander, along with Jemimah Rodrigues has been elevated to the B category in the BCCI central contract while the likes of Shikha Pandey and Poonam Yadav have been left out.

As per the central contracts, a player in the A category gets paid Rs 50 lakh over and above match fees, and Rs 30 lakh and Rs 10 lakh are allotted for the B and C category respectively. Only three players are contracted in the A category including current Team India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, flamboyant left-handed batter Smriti Mandhana and premier all-rounder Deepti Sharma.

There are many surprise inclusions and exclusions that will certainly raise many eyebrows. A total of seven new players, who weren’t contracted last year, have entered the contracts list including left-arm spinner Radha Yadav and left-hand batter Yastika Bhatia.

Left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, who was part of the elite Grade A list last year, has been moved down to Grade B while all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar slips from Grade B to Grade C. Indian Cricket Team Squad For Asia Cup

Bumrah still unfit; not picked for Australia ODI series

Team India is having a fantastic summer. After winning the first two Tests from Australia ODI Series in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the team has announced an unchanged squad for the rest of the two Tests. KL Rahul, whose form is a concern for the team, has been retained but has been stripped of his vice-captain position from the squad.

Almost all of the members are the same as the squad announced for the first two Tests. Saurashtra’s Jaydev Unadkat, who recently won the Ranji trophy, will be back with the squad for the third and fourth Test in Indore and Ahmedabad, respectively.

Team India squad for the third and fourth Test: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat.

Additionally, the selectors have also announced an 18-man squad for the 3-match ODI series against Australia. The likes of Shahbaz Ahmed and Rajat Patidar – who were part of the squad for the New Zealand series last month – have been left out. KL Rahul returns, too, at the expense of KS Bharat.

Sanju Samson, who has performed exceptionally in the limited chances he’s got, has been skipped for the limited-overs series.

India will miss the services of Rohit Sharma for the first ODI – who will be unavailable due to family commitments, BCCI said in a release. Hardik Pandya will lead the side in Rohit’s place.

Team India squad for the ODI series against Australia: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Jaydev Unadkat

Interestingly, Team India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has not been included in the Tests and ODI series. The talk is that the selectors don’t want to rush the Mumbai Indians pacer and want him to be fully fit for the ODI World Cup scheduled in October.
