Para-Shuttler and Noida District Magistrate Suhas L Yathiraj has made the nation proud. The badminton player won a bronze medal in men’s singles at the Spanish Para-Badminton International tournament.

After the win, Suhas Yathiraj was quoted as saying, “It’s a happy moment, and nothing is greater than to win a medal for our country in international events. I won bronze in Spain, could have been better. Will aim for gold in the upcoming tournaments. It is a very proud & happy moment when you win a medal for your country. Efforts are to give my best always. I will fulfill my responsibilities with at most sincerity, whether it is in administration or to represent India in sports.”

Suhas Yathiraj, who has won many laurels for the country, further added, “Looking forward to representing India at the Asian Games in China and winning the top honours there. The dream is to see the Indian flag being raised high.”

The Indian badminton team had a successful tournament. The team bagged 18 medals, including four gold medals at Spanish Level II Para-Badminton International 2023.

The Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup is held every four years and has featured teams worldwide since its inception. In the most recent edition, held in 2017, England beat India to take the title for the third time in their history. The tournament has seen some of the best female cricketers in the world showcase their skills on the international stage. 

Australia has been the dominant force in the Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup, having won seven titles since the inaugural edition in 1973. England has won the tournament four times and was most recently defeated by the Australians in the 2022 final. New Zealand’s victory at home in the 2000 edition is the only time the Australia-England duopoly has been broken. The Kiwis have been runners-up thrice (1993, 1997, and 2009). 

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with two runners-up positions at the ODI World Cup to their credit. Led by veteran players such as Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Harmanpreet Kaur, the Women in Blue have continued to inspire with their performances on the field. 

The new-age Indian players like Smrithi Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Shafali Verma are taking Indian cricket to the next level. Belinda Clark is a popular name in women’s cricket, having represented Australia in four World Cups and leading the team in three of them. She holds the record for the first (and only) double century in the Women’s World Cup to date and the first of the only two double centuries seen in Women’s ODI games. 

Belinda Clark achieved her historic double century in the 1997 World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 229 off just 155 balls in an inning that featured 22 boundaries and a strike rate of 147.74. Her performance helped Australia set their highest-ever ODI total and secure a 363-run victory against Denmark. 

The match between Australia and Denmark in the 1997 Women’s World Cup was one-sided, as Belinda Clark’s double century helped Australia set their highest-ever ODI total of 412 runs. Clark’s remarkable innings had 22 boundaries and a strike rate of 147.74.

Team Australia, led by Meg Lanning’s highest-ever total in the Women’s T20 World Cup, put up an impressive 191 for 4 when they batted first. This proved too much for Ireland Women to handle, and they could only make 113 for 7, 79 runs behind the target. This inning occurred on March 23, 2014, in Sylhet, Bangladesh, during the 2014 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. This was a Group B match between Australia and Ireland. 

Batting first, Australia scored an impressive total of 191/4 in 20 overs, with Meg Lanning top-scoring with 126 runs off just 65 balls. She hit 18 fours and four sixes in her knock, helping Australia to an imposing total. She was ably supported by Delissa Kimmince, who scored 35 off 34 balls. In reply, Ireland’s Women could never get going, and their innings ended at 113/7 in 20 overs. Australia skipper Meg Lanning was named Player of the Match for her brilliant knock.

Athapaththu’s incredible performance was even more impressive in light of Australian captain Meg Lanning’s own brilliant 152 not-out, which helped Australia secure an easy 8-wicket victory with 37 balls to spare. Despite her team’s loss, Athapaththu was awarded player of the match and cemented her place in the record books. 

Athapaththu’s 178 runs set a new Sri Lankan record for the highest individual score at the Women’s World Cup and was the third-highest unbeaten score in the tournament after Ellyse Perry’s 213. It was also her highest individual T20I score, surpassing her previous record of 76. 

Athapaththu described her record-breaking innings as an “unforgettable experience” and said it was “a great honor” to contribute to her team’s success. Deandra Dottin racked up a historic performance in the 2010 ICC Women’s World T20 opening match at Basseterre, where she scored 112 runs in just 45 balls. Deandra Dottin entered the game when her team’s score was 52/4 in the 10th over and went on to make history with the first century scored by a woman in T20Is. Her blistering knock helped the Windies to an impressive 175/5, which they defended successfully against South Africa by 17 runs. Beth Mooney to lead Gujarat Giants in WPL

Australia’s batter Beth Mooney has been appointed the captain of the Gujarat Giants team for the inaugural Women’s Premier League. Team India’s right-arm orthodox spinner Sneh Rana has been chosen as Mooney’s deputy.

Speaking about the appointment, Mooney said, “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Adani Gujarat Giants in the historic Women’s Premier League’s inaugural edition in 2023.” She further added, “The squad is keen to get the ball rolling soon and put out an entertaining and effective brand of cricket in the debut season of the WPL. It will be fantastic to have the likes of Sneh as my deputy and Mithali Raj, Rachael Haynes and Nooshin Al Khadeer as pivotal parts of the team.”

This will be Mooney’s first experience at leading a side in an overseas T20 league. However, her record as a batter in the format is exceptional. She has hit 18 half-centuries in the 83 T20 games she has played, scoring 2,350 runs.

India’s Sneh Rana who is appointed as the vice captain of Gujarat Giants. Rana, who is a master of the T20 format has bagged 24 wickets from 25 games with an economy rate of 6.21. “Being the vice-captain of the Gujarat Giants is a huge responsibility and I am keenly looking forward to putting up a great show for the debut edition of the Women’s Premier League,” said Rana.

Lionel Messi wins the Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2022

After conquering his long-desired wish, the men’s FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi has won the Best Men’s Player for 2022 at the FIFA Awards conducted yesterday.

Messi, who had a stunning World Cup with seven stunning goals and three assists during the tournament, was one of the strong contenders for the award. Besides Messi, his current PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema were also in the running for the award.

This is the second time Messi has won the award, which FIFA first inaugurated in 2016 after football’s world governing body split from Ballon d’Or organizers France Football.

Additionally, Spain’s Alexia Putellas won the best women’s player award for a second straight year. Argentina’s World Cup-winning manager Lionel Scaloni was voted the FIFA men’s coach of the year.

Also, Argentina’s World Cup winner Emiliano Martínez was voted FIFA’s best men’s goalkeeper. Polish amputee Marcin Oleksy won the Puskas prize for the best goal of the year at the FIFA awards. Warta Poznan’s Oleksy had scored a stunning volley against Stal Rzeszow, which won him the Puskas trophy in Paris.

The award, which is voted for by national team coaches and captains, journalists, and also fans, recognizes the best talent from the world of football.

It was incredible to see Danni Wyatt score 124 runs in India’s backyard, as she hit Indian bowlers all around the ground and looked capable of chasing down any target. The conditions were perfect for batting, with the wicket being very good and the outfield fast, allowing her to have an astonishing strike rate of 200 and a run rate of over 10 while trying to reach the target of almost 200 runs. 

Danni Wyatt was in remarkable form during her match against India, having shared a 61-run opening stand (in 5.2 overs) with Bryony Smith and then a 96-run partnership with Tammy Beaumont on the second wicket. She scored fifty runs in 24 balls and went on to hit 15 boundaries and five sixes in her 64-ball 124. Her fantastic batting was only made possible due to an ideal wicket and perfect boundaries, allowing her to achieve a team fifty in 4.4 overs, 67 runs in the Powerplay, and the hundred mark in 9.2 overs.

The new era has begun. Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United has finally landed its hands on a trophy after six long years. The Red Devils defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United started the match with some excellent gameplay. The team relentlessly attacked to put Newcastle United on the back foot. Soon after, Casemiro scored the opener for Erik ten Hag’s side at Wembley to give them the lead.

The club widened their lead as a Marcus Rashford shot was deflected by Sven Botman in his own goal to make matters worse for the Magpies.

With this win, the Premier League club won its first piece of silverware since they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

Erik Ten Hag, who has been brilliant at the club, said in the post-match interview, “Yet again this evening, they had the right spirit. It’s a very good spirit, they act as a team and fight, give everything.” He further added, “It was not always the best football, but it was effective. Firstly, you have to win the first one [trophy]. We will get a lot of inspiration from this, but also more confidence that we can do it.”

The Mighty Australians win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for a record 6th time

The Australian women have emerged as the champions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. The defending champions crushed the South Africans by 19 runs to win the T20 World Cup for the sixth time. With the win, the Australians have won the title for the third consecutive time, creating a world record in the history of international cricket.

Batting first, the Australians rode on Beth Mooney’s fantastic innings of 74 runs in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The left-handed batter had a bit of support from Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner to ensure the team reached a competitive total of 156 runs from their quota of 20 overs. For the hosts, Shabnim Ismail had a wonderful spell giving away just 26 runs from her four overs and taking two crucial wickets.

In the second innings of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, South Africa didn’t have a great start. The team scored just 22 runs in the first six overs. But with the wickets in hand, the team knew they could capitalize in the middle overs. A 55-run stand between the in-form batter Laura Wolvaardt (61 off 48 balls) and Chloe Tryon (25 off 23 balls) got the South Africans in the chase. However, some clever bowling from the Australians derailed the momentum of the South Africans.

The likes of Megan Schutt, Gardner, and Darcie Brown gave little away as South Africa was left with too much to do in the end. All that the hosts could manage was 137/6, as the Australian bowlers remained calm right through.

We witnessed how many Women’s cricketers garnered significant sums from teams during the recently concluded Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction as a result of their spotless records and dazzling numbers. A few celebrities who made news after becoming some of the most expensive purchases at the event were Smriti Mandhana, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Ashleigh Gardner, Deepti Sharma, and Shafali Verma. Their input will be essential in determining the success of their respective franchises in the forthcoming competition. 

In the historic first Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on February 13, INR 59.50 crore was spent on 87 players, 30 of whom are international stars. The performances of the international players will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining the fate of the teams come March. Only 87 of the 449 players featured in the WPL 2023 auction could secure contracts. Some well-known performers from the global stage went unsold from the auction’s focus from either of the franchises. 

The first season of Women’s Premier League is set to begin on 4th March, and the finals of the tournament will be played on 26th March. Before the tournament proceeds, let’s have a look at the best teams in the grand Indian tournament.

RCB bought a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.9 crores. RCB enjoys constructing its brand around famous players. Imagine the men’s team as having Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli. Similar to the Women’s Premier League(WPL), they have set up a formidable trio consisting of Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, a four-time winner of the T20 World Cup, and Dane van Niekerk of South Africa. 

Apart from some of the renowned Indian superstars, RCB has managed to gather a talented bunch of international all-rounders. The team’s coach and management have the difficult task of deciding which cricketers to leave out of their far-reaching and talented squad, featuring renowned players such as Perry, Sophie Devine, van Niekerk, and Heather Knight, who all possess both batting and bowling capabilities. 

Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, and Renuka Singh add even more firepower to the already impressive overseas contingent of top-class cricketers. This set of players automatically makes RCB one of the top favorites to win the Indian T20 League. However, the lack of a quality Indian wrist-spinner on the bouncy Mumbai pitches might be a drawback.

A chance to play for the MI-based franchise will be especially poignant for Harmanpreet Kaur, who made her debut on the Mumbai pitches in 2013 with a memorable century in the Women’s World Cup. This return to the city will mark the start of an exciting new phase of Indian women’s cricket, during which Harmanpreet could potentially lead the Mumbai Indians. Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Pooja Vastrakar are sure to appear at the top of the team’s lineup. Both Sciver-Brunt and Vastrakar are essential cogs because of their mobility in the field against speed and spin, as well as their superb medium pace and ability to bowl a heavy ball in the middle overs. 

Mumbai Indians have gone the extra mile in gathering a large selection of reserve players thanks to their dedicated scouting system. Additionally, they have also developed a robust pool of India Under-19 players and will use this time to help them grow and develop over the years. Mumbai Indians are known for creating superstars like the franchise previously did with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. The Capitals’ top order is composed of Shafali, Rodrigues, and Lanning. Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning makes the team look invincible on paper. 

Delhi Capitals have a strong bowling troupe consisting of Poonam Yadav, Jess Jonassen, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Arundhati Reddy, and Marizanne Kapp. With Taniya Bhatia and Aparna Mondal as wicketkeepers, however, the lower-middle order might be hindered due to their lack of striking ability.

GG amassed a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.5 crores. Gujarat Giants made Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner one of the most expensive overseas purchases in the auction at INR 3.2 crore (USD 390,000 approx). Ashleigh Gardner recently achieved her best-ever bowling figures in T20Is. Gardner mentioned that the conditions at DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium are perfect for good strokeplay, which will benefit her as a hitter and also help the ball grip and turn. Her performance with both bat and ball is expected to make a significant impact. 

With her abundance of experience in the domestic circuit, Sneh Rana could be a huge asset for Mumbai Indians during the Women’s Premier League. Additionally, she will be reuniting with Nooshin Al Khadeer, her former Railways coach, who has had a major impact on Rana’s return to the national side. Her flight and dip with the ball could be strategic tools for the two venues hosting all 22 games. 

Gujarat Giants have some of the most specialized overseas options available to them, in addition to reliable all-rounders Deandra Dottin and Annabel Sutherland, who both specialize in seam bowling. Gujarat Giants are lacking a bit in the local Indian experience department, with Harleen Deol, S Meghana, and D Hemalatha being their only Indian batters who can be trusted in critical moments or if any unexpected injuries arise.

Along with Deepti, Devika Vaidya, Parshavi Chopra, Grace Harris, and Tahlia McGrath, who can all provide an impact with both the bat and ball, the team has the potential to shift momentum and take the game in their favor.

Deepti Sharma is a key player in the line-up, especially in spin-friendly pitch conditions in Mumbai. Sharma was India’s second-most expensive player in the WPL 2023 auction with an INR 2.6 crore price tag, behind Smriti Mandhana. Sharma’s ability to produce results with both batting and bowling makes her a vital part of the team. Alyssa Healy is an essential part of the Warriorz top lineup and team, offering plenty of international experience. She has a remarkable ability to turn the tides in her team’s favor, with an impressive batting average of 128.26 in T20Is. 

Warriorz has an excellent core spin trio with Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Sophie Ecclestone, and Deepti at the helm. With Shabnim Ismail and Anjali Sarvani providing quality support in the pace department, Healy, the Under-19 India opener Shweta Sehrawat, and McGrath form a solid top order. Having said that, Kiran Navgire and the lesser-known Laxmi Yadav are the only dedicated batters in the middle order; Warriorz needs players who can take on an anchor role if a few quick wickets fall early in innings.

Manchester United did the unthinkable. The Red Devils have knocked Barcelona out of the Europa League. After the first leg ended in a 2-2 draw, the Premier League club came from behind to score two goals to take the side to the next round of the Europa League.

Both sides played aggressively in the early minutes of play to get one in the opposition’s net. And maybe this approach cost them a penalty in the 18th minute after Bruno Fernandes performed a rash challenge on Alejandro Balde. Robert Lewandowski, who was as cool as a cucumber, converted the penalty into a goal and gave the Blaugrana the lead.

But Fred equalized early in the second half before substitute Antony completed the turnaround for Manchester United 17 minutes from full time.

Erik Ten Hag called this one of the best wins of his managerial career. In a post-match interview, he said, “It was a magnificent night. I think it is brilliant when you can beat Barcelona – eight points ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga – and we have seen this week Real Madrid playing [in their 5-2 win [over Liverpool]. We did a magnificent performance.”

The victory marks Manchester United’s first win over Barcelona since the narrow 1-0 win in the Champions League semi-final second leg in April 2008.

Aiden Markram to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023

Aiden Markram’s stocks are continuously rising. After leading the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to a title-winning campaign in 2023 SA20, the South African has been appointed to lead the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023.

An SRH official revealed that the franchise management, in consultation with head coach Brian Lara, decided to make Aiden Markram the skipper after his astounding performance in the recent SA20, in which the South African led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape side to the title.

“I am open to taking up the SRH leadership if it comes my way, but I will not mind if it does not. I am prepared, but it is up to the management,” Markram told Cricbuzz recently in Johannesburg.

Markram has good leadership skills. It was under him that the South African team won their only World Cup trophy beating Pakistan in the final of the under-19 World Cup.

Additionally, Delhi Capitals have announced David Warner as the skipper in place of Rishabh Pant. “David will be our captain, and Axar Patel will be his deputy,” said a member of the ownership group of Delhi Capitals.
