Erik Ten Hag spotted having dinner with Man Utd legend Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United’s current manager Erik Ten Hag is having a dream run. After having a successful run with the club, taking them from being mere competitors to a title contender, the manager was spotted having dinner with Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Erik Ten Hag was seen having dinner with United icon Ferguson at an Italian restaurant in Cheshire.

Manchester United under Ten Hag is a different team. The club is currently in third position in the Premier League and has a real shot at winning the title too. Also, the Red Devils have reached the final of the Carabao Cup, where they’ll face Newcastle United at Wembley.

Alex Ferguson has won Premier League Manager of the Season on 11 occasions, as well as picking up the monthly accolade 27 times and numerous other individual awards, such as LMA Manager of the Year and LMA Manager of the Decade. His all-time Premier League record stands at 528 wins from 810 matches. He is the most successful manager in British football history, winning 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United.

Manchester United fans will be extremely happy with this news and hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson might have given a secret tip or two to the current United manager.

Revisiting the best moments from the Women's T20 World Cup

Revisiting the best moments from the Women’s T20 World Cup

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is underway. From thrilling chases to memorable bowling spells, the Women’s T20 World Cup has had enough to satiate every sportsperson’s hunger.

There are a lot of expectations from Women in Blue. After having come close to lifting the most prestigious trophy in the sport twice in the past, Team India will be hoping to end their wait for a maiden World Cup triumph.

The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup ticks all the boxes. From having a blockbuster opening pair of Smriti Mandhana & Shafali Verma to one of the best contenders for the best-emerging talent in Richa Ghosh to having a charismatic skipper in Harmanpreet Kaur, the current squad looks set to achieve the glory. After Australia and England, India is the favourite to lift the trophy.

With the tournament moving towards its knockout stage, we take a look at some of the unforgettable moments from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Ellyse Perry’s right foot wins Australia the 2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final

The 2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final saw one of the most thrilling grand finales of a cricket tournament. The Invincible Australian side faced the New Zealanders at Barbados’ Kensington Oval.

Batting first, Australia had a disastrous start, with half the side dismissed for just 50 runs. However, some gritty batting from their lower order helped the team manage 106 runs in their full quota of 20 overs.

Now, defending such a small total would be a monumental task. But the Aussies were up for the task. With some intelligent bowling and excellent fielding, the Australians kept taking regular wickets and kept the run rate in check.

With 14 runs needed off the final over, the Australian skipper Alex Blackwell backed Ellyse Perry to bowl the final over. The first four deliveries went for seven runs leaving the equation as seven additional runs needed in the final two deliveries. The fifth ball went for another two runs, with the New Zealanders needing five runs off the last ball.

Powerful New Zealand batter Sophie Devine was on strike for the last ball and was looking to find a boundary to level the scores. However, Ellyse Perry had other plans. Perry bowled a yorker which Devine hit straight. Perry showed her presence of mind by using her boot to stop the ball and win the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup trophy for her team.

Windies Women’s title-clinching victory against Australia in 2016

The year 2016 was memorable for the West Indies. The Caribbean teams managed to win multiple prestigious tournaments. After clinching the under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, the women’s team went one step ahead and won the Senior Women’s T20 World Cup.

The final, being played at Eden Gardens, saw two powerhouses of cricket go against each other. Batting first, the Australians made 148/5 with half-centuries from Elyse Villani and Meg Lanning.

Although not a huge target, the Australians felt it was a competitive total. The chase began, and Windies women thrashed every plan made by the Australian team. The openers, Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor, put on a show for the Kolkata audience with an opening partnership of 120 runs in just 15 overs. Needing just 28 runs in the last five overs, the Windies lost both their well-settled batters, and it was left to their new batters to take the team home.

With 13 runs needed from the last two overs, Deandra Dottin and Britney Cooper managed to keep calm and win their team’s first ICC trophy.

P.S. Also, on that day, the men’s team defeated England to defend their ICC T20 World Cup trophy.

Heather Knight’s iconic innings in the 2020 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup

England skipper Heather Knight showed her class at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. During their group-stage match against Thailand, the cricketer scored an unbeaten 108* from just 66 deliveries, and her efforts ensured England cruised home to victory at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The batter had 13 boundaries, and four strikes crossed the boundary line.

With the century, the batter became the first woman to smash a ton in all three formats.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s blistering ton at the 2018 T20 World Cup vs New Zealand

Current Team India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur lit up the opening game of the 2018 T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter smashed 103 runs off 51 balls with eight maximums and seven boundaries.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s swashbuckling innings helped the team post 194/5 in the first innings. In the second innings, the Indian bowlers bowled intelligently to restrict the opposition to 160/9 in their full quota of 20 overs.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s stroke-filled innings was the highlight of India’s innings. Incidentally, it was the first century by an Indian woman in T20Is.

Relive the historic ton by the Indian batter.

Poonam Yadav spins her magic to take India to victory against Australia

Team India’s magician leg-spinner Poonam Yadav spun her web to dismantle the Australian batting order. After scraping together what looked like a below-par total of 132, the leg spin of Poonam Yadav caused chaos at the Showground Stadium.

The wrist-spinner took four wickets for 19 runs and won the game single-handedly for the Women in Blue.

Those were some of the unforgettable moments from the Women’s T20 World Cup. Which one among the lot is the favourite?

TATA Group bags the title rights for Women’s Premier League

After bagging the men’s IPL title rights, TATA Group has achieved the double. The Indian multinational conglomerate has snapped up the title rights for the inaugural Women’s Premier League.

As per Cricbuzz, Tata Sons, the holding company of the conglomerate, will have the title rights for the first five years, and the products that will be leveraged during the league will be Tata Motors and Tata financial services.

The BCCI had invited bids for the title rights on February 9, days before the inaugural auction. Two weeks later, the Indian cricket board has found their partners in what is a huge boost to the league. The title sponsorship and the broadcast deal with Viacom already make WPL one of the biggest franchise T20 leagues in the cricket fraternity.

The deal was confirmed by Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The cricket administrator said, ” I am delighted to announce the #TataGroup as the title sponsor of the inaugural #WPL. With their support, we’re confident that we can take women’s cricket to the next level.”

The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League will kick off on March 4. The 22-game season will be played across two venues – DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The final will be played on March 26, 5 days before IPL 2023.

The 15 Strangest Prizes given in Sports

The 15 Strangest Prizes given in Sports

Every sport is played for the reward, be it a golden trophy or a mixer-grinder; the prizes are a must. There are many strangest prizes that have been given out in sports. Some examples include “A full crate of beer” awarded to the man of the match of The Zimbabwean Premier League, a gigantic credit card, and even a live chicken. Some of these odd awards, whether they serve as an acknowledgment for a Man of the Match performance, Player of the Month consistency, or any other honor that recognizes excellent form, actually left us perplexed. Let’s have a look at some of those.

Top 15 Strangest Prizes given in Sports

A chicken

This Man of the Match award from Malawi was more of a local fan’s gesture of appreciation than a full-fledged trophy. Despite this, there is no denying how bizarre it is on its whole. Supporters of Nyassa Big Bullets are accustomed to rewarding their players to encourage them. Hassan Kajoke, a striker of the team, was handed a live chicken in July 2019 after leading the team to a 5-0 victory.

A jeweled dagger

Golf’s Trophée Hassan II in Morocco chooses a jeweled ceremonial dagger over a jacket or cardigan, which are prizes at the Masters and Arnold Palmer Invitational, respectively. Welshman Rhys Davis won it in 2010, but in order to get the weapon on the plane for his return voyage home, he needed a special letter of permission from the Moroccan Royal Family.

Blender

When Luke Wright was given a blender as the Man of the Match prize for his performance in the Dhaka Premier League. The cricketer for England’s post at the time had gone viral. “Pleased we won my first match for Abhanai today. Have to say I have never been given a blender for MoM before,” he tweeted.

A full crate of beer

Champagne may no longer be awarded a Man of the Match trophy in the Premier League, but other nations continue to award alcohol—and in considerable quantities, too. A whole crate of beer has occasionally been given as a reward for Man of the Match performances in the Zimbabwean Premier League, which is sponsored by Castle Lager. Not exactly the best award for a professional athlete.

A cow

Winners of alpine ski competitions frequently receive animals, but this is primarily symbolic. Up until a live calf or $5,000 offer was made to Lindsey Vonn in France’s Val d’Isère. As you would have anticipated, Vonn took the calf, much to the chagrin of the organizer. The cow was valued at $20,000, so Vonn’s decision to buy it was more than savvy.

Bat grip and shoelaces

In the opening ODI of India’s tour to Australia in 2018–19, the speedster bowled superbly. Jhye Richardson took four wickets and only conceded 26 runs. His bowling performance was immensely helpful for the Australians as they won the opening game of the three-match ODI series. Funny enough, the fast bowler received the Man of the Match award during the presentation ceremony in the form of shoelaces and a bat grip.

The India-Australia series is one of the most valuable in sports, as it is widely recognized. The trophies handed out during the series drew criticism from several former cricket players. The Indian team ultimately won the series. However, they were only granted $500, and the organizers received a lot of criticism for this.

A rice cooker

Eoin Morgan played many match-winning performances during his time in the Dhaka Premier League. The southpaw received many Player of the Match awards for his efforts. However, one such prize turned out to be a rice cooker. Morgan assumed the stove was being used as a metaphor for his terrific knock “under pressure,” which made the situation rather comical. But it turned out that one of the sponsors was the rice cooker brand.

Milk and rosewater

Indianapolis 500 victors are given a milk bottle, which they will gulp from and then pour over their heads (they even have to specify their milk preference before racing). Alcohol use is not unlawful in Bahrain, although it is not permitted outside. Therefore, Waard, a non-alcoholic rosewater beverage, is used in place of the customary victory spray at Formula 1 races.

A gigantic credit card

We have no doubt that the Kaiser Chiefs midfielder enjoyed the 2,000 South African Rand that he received from sponsors ABSA bank in April 2014 as a Man of the Match award, but we’re still not sure why the novelty credit card he was given had to be quite so big. This item would have been difficult to transport home, and using contactless payment would require at least two people to operate.

Flip Flops

A prize is a prize, but we don’t think a pair of flip-flops should ever be given out as the Man of the Match award except for the final match before the summer break. However, Ghanaian Premier League team Dreams FC decided to frequently award pairs of the infamously fragile shoes as a reward for exceptional performances via their sponsors. They don’t appear top of the line from the picture below, and the receiver appears more interested in being somewhere else than at the presentation.

A Burger King paper crown

Undoubtedly the least expensive item on this list, Franco Armani of Argentina received a paper crown from one of the fast food moguls following his outstanding River Plate performance against Danubio in March 2018. Armani was forced to give his post-game interview while wearing the crown due to sponsorship obligations, making him appear silly.

Sunshine snacks in CPL

One of the top T20 cricket competitions is the Caribbean Premier League. Since several T20 franchises worldwide had Caribbean cricketers as their main attraction, the West Indies Cricket Board decided to launch its own T20 League. Sunshine Snacks is one of the tournament’s many notable sponsors. Customers of the food companies receive nuts and chips, and they also follow this strategy with Man of the Matches. The sponsor gave players of the match award winners a snack basket, which was hilarious because the players couldn’t eat greasy snacks given the current fitness standards of the sport.

Bananas

Bicyclists adore bananas. They contain carbs to boost energy levels as well as potassium to assist in restoring electrolytes lost via perspiration. The opening stage winner in Alanya is awarded a few kilograms of bananas, proving that no one likes them nearly as much as the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey. That might not seem like much, but it makes sense because the city produces most of the fruit in Turkey, with about 40,000 tonnes produced yearly.

5GB of mobile data

In 2018, Hlompho Kekana of the South African team Mamelodi Sundowns went viral after receiving 5GB of mobile data from league sponsors after a performance that won him the “Man of the Match.” Such a prize would come in handy in a place where high-speed internet can be expensive. But it’s not the kind of thing you can put on your mantle and look back on when your career is gone!

A fresh fish

In August 2019, after winning Real Sociedad’s Player of the Month award, current Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard received a sizable fresh fish for reasons that we’ve never quite been able to decipher. He could have been excused for having the same confused look on his face as many others on this list at the age of 16, especially because he was earning a sizable weekly wage.

Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023: China beats Korea to win Gold

Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023: China beats Korea to clinch the gold medal

China has defended its title. The champions beat Korea 3-1 in the Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023 to clinch the gold medal. The badminton tournament being played in Dubai also saw India winning the bronze medal.

After a couple of narrow 3-2 wins over Malaysia and India in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, China made slightly easier work of South Korea in the final. Women’s doubles pairing Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning secured the decisive point as a Chinese line-up, missing most of their top players, came out on top.

After beating HS Prannoy, China’s Lei Lanxi beat Lee Yun-gyu comfortably to take the opening game in the singles game. Lee led 10-6 in the first game, but Lei – ranked 121 in the world – won the last six points from seven to take it 21-16.

The Chinese then secured four consecutive points in game two to hold an 11-7 advantage at the interval and stayed clear to seal a 21-16, 21-15 victory in the Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023 tournament.

In the women’s singles, Gao Fangjie took another big scalp to double China’s lead, defeating Kim Ga-eun 21-15, 21-15. The Chinese women’s doubles team won 21-11, 21-10, which saw poor defending from the Korean players early in the game.

Additionally, India, who lost 3-2 to China, and Thailand, who lost 3-1 to Korea, picked up the bronze medals.

Indian Cricket Team Squad For Asia Cup

Bumrah still unfit; not picked for Australia ODI series

Team India is having a fantastic summer. After winning the first two Tests from Australia ODI Series in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the team has announced an unchanged squad for the rest of the two Tests. KL Rahul, whose form is a concern for the team, has been retained but has been stripped of his vice-captain position from the squad.

Almost all of the members are the same as the squad announced for the first two Tests. Saurashtra’s Jaydev Unadkat, who recently won the Ranji trophy, will be back with the squad for the third and fourth Test in Indore and Ahmedabad, respectively.

Team India squad for the third and fourth Test: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat.

Additionally, the selectors have also announced an 18-man squad for the 3-match ODI series against Australia. The likes of Shahbaz Ahmed and Rajat Patidar – who were part of the squad for the New Zealand series last month – have been left out. KL Rahul returns, too, at the expense of KS Bharat.

Sanju Samson, who has performed exceptionally in the limited chances he’s got, has been skipped for the limited-overs series.

India will miss the services of Rohit Sharma for the first ODI – who will be unavailable due to family commitments, BCCI said in a release. Hardik Pandya will lead the side in Rohit’s place.

Team India squad for the ODI series against Australia: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Jaydev Unadkat

Interestingly, Team India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has not been included in the Tests and ODI series. The talk is that the selectors don’t want to rush the Mumbai Indians pacer and want him to be fully fit for the ODI World Cup scheduled in October.

Top 15 Unusual Superstitions of football players

Superstitions and bizarre rituals have a very narrow border between them, but some people are able to cross it a little bit more than others. Superstition in football is surprisingly common. Players, managers, and team presidents all have their own rituals and lucky items, such as a favorite t-shirt or pair of underwear that they wear for good luck. They even have superstitions about what order to put on their boots. It is not surprising that team members of all levels, from players to managers to team presidents, also have their own superstitions before, during, and after games.

More specifically, football superstitions often revolve around rituals that are done before and during the game, such as crossing oneself or finding a specific seat to sit in. Some players even have lucky charms that they carry with them. There have been reports of teams having specific colors for playing gear or pregame meals to bring about good luck.

Football players also have superstitions about their equipment, such as the order in which they put on their boots or gloves. There have been reported cases of players wearing certain pieces of clothing throughout the season, believing it will bring them luck. Additionally, some players have rituals they perform before each game, such as spinning around a certain number of times or having a specific way of entering the field. Let’s have a look at some of the most unusual superstitions of football players.

Top 15 Unusual superstitions of football players

Cristiano Ronaldo

Arguably, the greatest footballer on earth, Cristiano Ronaldo, also carries a set of superstitions with him. The former Real Madrid superstar has a set of things he practices daily before every game. Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his superstitious behavior. He has been observed to wear the same pair of socks during a streak of games, cross himself before a match, and enter the field with his right foot first.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also carries a lucky charm with him- an old Portuguese coin that was given to him by his grandfather. Ronaldo has several superstitious habits, such as being the first to disembark while traveling to a game by plane and standing in the same way during free-kicks. He also has other unique superstitions, such as eating a certain meal before a game or listening to a specific song.

Pele

Pele, one of the most successful league goal scorers and greatest players of all time, was not exempt from superstition. During a difficult period in his career, he thought the cause might be tied to a jersey he had given away to a fan after a match. He sent a friend on a mission to retrieve the jersey to remedy the situation.

Fortunately, the friend was able to locate the shirt and give it back to Pele. Shortly after, Pele’s goal-scoring form was restored. However, Pele’s friend didn’t really find his jersey but gave the three-time World Cup champion the jersey he had worn in the previous game. Nevertheless, his trick worked, and Pele got back into his old form.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi has an interesting superstitious ritual that he follows before taking a free kick – he will place the ball down with both hands, step back the same amount of steps each time, spread his legs, and take a deep breath. This technique has definitely paid off, with Messi often scoring goals from the resulting set piece!

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale had a few superstitious rituals to help him avoid injuries. One of those was cutting holes in his socks before stepping onto the pitch, believing it helped to prevent compression on his calf muscles. He also used to drive his Lamborghini Aventador Roadster to games but stopped because he thought the seating put too much pressure on that area of his legs. His superstitions seem to have worked, as he left the game as one of the best to be out there.

John Terry

John Terry was well-known at Chelsea for having around 50 superstitions, such as sitting in the same place on the team bus and always listening to the same Usher album. He also had his own lucky pair of shin pads, which he wore for ten seasons. John Terry would definitely be a grandmaster if awards were given out for superstition.

Danielle De Rossi

The famous player from Rome was also known for his superstitious behavior. During the 2012 World Cup, Danielle De Rossi sported one long sleeve on his left arm, and a short sleeve on his right, which some say was an homage to the gladiators of the Colosseum. Others believe he may have been trying to hide a tattoo on his left arm.

Johan Cruyff

Johan Cruyff made an indelible mark on the history of football. His playing for Ajax and Barcelona helped to popularize the “total football” style, which led the Netherlands to a World Cup final. His iconic Cruyff turn is still one of the toughest skills to master for any footballer today. Despite his incredible football aptitude, Cruyff was famous for his pre-match rituals, which were very difficult to understand. Shortly before kick-off, he was known to slap goalkeeper Gert Bals in the stomach and then walk to the opposite half of the field to spit out his chewing gum toward the opposition goal.

“It’s odd I know, but it seems to work for me. Once I’ve gone through with my little system before the game, my mind is fully focused on what we have to do to be successful on the pitch,” said Cruyff.

Cruyff’s usual pre-match rituals were put to the test at the 1969 European Cup final when he forgot to chew gum. Cruyff slapped goalkeeper Gert Bals in the stomach as usual and walked to the opposite half of the field to try and realized he wasn’t chewing any gum. Unfortunately for Ajax, they ended up losing the match 4-1.

Phil Jones

Manchester United’s defender Phil Jones has an interesting superstition – he will determine whether to put on his left or right sock first depending on if the Red Devils are playing at home or away. This certainly makes for an intriguing pre-match ritual.

Jones explained: “The fixtures list United on the left side when we’re at home and on the right when we’re away. So this weekend, I’ll put my right sock on first because it will be Swansea v United.” “Next week, if I play against Benfica at Old Trafford, I’ll put my left sock on.”

He added: “I also don’t like stepping on white lines on the pitch. When I cross a white line, I’ll take the first step with the foot that corresponds to whether we’re home or away.”

Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy’s superstitious ritual prior to every Leicester City Premier League game during their successful 2015-2016 season was quite unique – he would drink half a bottle of port and then gulp three cans of Red Bull in one go the day before a match. It looks like this truly gave him the wings he needed to soar to success!

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas had a curious pre-game ritual involving his wife, Daniella Semaan. He would kiss a ring she gave him four times (his lucky number) before putting it in the locker and stepping out on the pitch. It seems that this little superstition helped him perform on the pitch as he was a key player for Chelsea

Mesut Ozil

Former Fenerbahce star Mesut Ozil had some unusual pre-game rituals, such as tying several knots in his boots and always making sure to put the right boot on first. We’re sure his kit man had a tough time dealing with this superstitious behavior!

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s pre-game ritual involves a sex ban for his wife, Helena Seger, as he believes it affects his performance on the pitch. He admitted to having a particularly bad game after an evening of fun, so this superstition is definitely something he sticks to.

Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois is known to have a superstitious ritual that he follows during Belgium’s national anthem – he touches his chin for good luck. Observant fans have spotted this many times during games, and it looks like this ritual has been successful in keeping him at the top of his game!

David Beckham

Before leaving for a game, David Beckham (who admits he suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder) was known to have a superstitious ritual of making sure all the condiments in his fridge were arranged perfectly. He had to make sure nothing was out of place before he left his house.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney’s pre-game snack of choice is no surprise – he loved to drink a bowl of Coco Pops cereal! This makes sense, as the cereal is known for its chocolatey taste, and it likely gives him a boost before taking the pitch.

“I tend to have just a bowl of coco pops,” he once admitted. “The normal ones, not the moons and the stars.”

Mumbai City FC lost against Bengaluru FC

Bengaluru FC breaks Mumbai City FC’s unbeaten run

Mumbai City FC, who were on an 18-game unbeaten run, had an off day yesterday. The league toppers were defeated for the first time this season by 4th-placed Bengaluru FC. The Islanders playing their 19th game, were on track to record their 19th consecutive win before Bengaluru FC shocked the League Shield winners by scoring 2 goals against Mumbai’s one goal.

The game, being played at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, saw a great contest between both teams in the first half. Both teams were managing great counters and were challenging the opposition’s defense. However, it was Sunil Chhetri who broke the deadlock scoring a fantastic header to give the hosts the lead in the 57th minute.

To make matters worse, Bengaluru FC pulled one back through a superb goal by Javi Hernandez in the 69th minute. Mumbai City FC threatened to bring down the deficit by making some strong attacks. And they succeeded when an excellent corner was converted by Mourtada Sergine Fall in the 77th minute. The team made consistent attacks to try and equalize but couldn’t succeed.

Despite the defeat, Buckingham spoke highly of his players and the records they achieved this season. “Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to continue that tonight but congratulations firstly to Bengaluru (FC). Now they had a couple of chances, took their chances and that came away at an important time for them with the three points. It is a good lesson for us. We need to be at the top of our game in every game to make sure that we get ourselves in a position to win the game,” Buckingham said in the post-match press conference.

He further stated, “Invincible is not something that we speak about as a staff group or players and we keep talking about it game to game. My job is to put the best team out for each game and I will continue to do that for the next game against Bengaluru FC and East Bengal. We’re far from finished yet.”

Mumbai City FC

Is Des Buckingham’s Mumbai City FC the new “The Invincibles”?

Mumbai City FC, the current league leader of the Indian Super League 2022/23 season, is on a dream run. The club is on a 178-game unbeaten run in the Hero ISL 2022/23 season.

The Ranbir Kapoor-owned club has had a massive transformation. And the majority of the success can be credited to one person, Des Buckingham. The English coach has had spells at Stoke City U23, Melbourne City, New Zealand U20, and Oxford United.

Des Buckingham is seen as one of the most forward-thinking and progressive managers in world football. His young age allows him to be more flexible to newer ideas. While his extensive experience in youth development allows him to understand a player’s psychology, which is greatly important as a head coach. He likes to play fearless and pleasing football

Buckingham likes his team to dictate the play with possession and passing. He usually opts for a basic 4-2-3-1 with two energetic midfielders in the pivot, who will allow him quick transitions and recycling of the ball during different circumstances.

The same strategy was executed at Mumbai City FC in ISL’s 2022/23 season. Due to Buckingham’s tactics has scored 53 goals, and 18 times his team has been on the receiving end, making Mumbai City FC with the highest goal difference in the league.

Buckingham’s positive and aggressive approach has earned his side the tag of “The Invincibles.” Now many of you might be aware of the tag famously earned by Arsenal during the 2003/04 English Premier League season.

While earning the “The Invincibles” tag, Mumbai City FC has made some excellent records that might be impossible for anyone to break in the near future.

→  Longest winning streak in ISL history:

After beating Odisha FC 4-2, the Islanders had equaled Jamshedpur FC’s record of 7 consecutive wins in ISL. The Men of Steel had achieved this in ISL 2021-22 when they were the ISL League Shield winners. Now after their 4-0 thumping win over Kerala Blasters FC, where all the goals came in the 1st half, Mumbai City FC became the first team to win eight games on the trot in ISL.

→ Longest unbeaten streak at home in a single season

Mumbai has played nine matches at home without losing a single game, and it is a club record. Their previous record was six unbeaten games at home, and they have now surpassed that with full power.

→ Longest unbeaten run in a single ISL season

ATK Mohun Bagan held the previous record of going 16 games without tasting a defeat in the 2021-22 season. In the 2022-23 season, the Islanders have gone a notch higher as they are unbeaten for the last 18 matches.

Let’s have a look at the other unbeaten runs by clubs in ISL.

Team Season(s) Number of matches
Mumbai City FC 22-23 18

→ Most goals scored in an ISL season

With 53 goals in 18 games this season, Mumbai City FC is the new owner of the record for most goals scored in the league stage of an ISL season. The club has averaged three goals per game, far better than The Invincible Arsenal, which averaged 1.92 goals per game during the 2003/04 Premier League season.

→ Most points in a single ISL season

The Islanders have secured 46 points from 18 matches this season. The Men in Blue have beaten Jamshedpur FC’s record (43 points in  Hero ISL 2021-22) for the most points in a single ISL season by a huge margin. Only three clubs have managed to pick up 40 or more points in a single Hero ISL season. Mumbai City FC is one this season.

Des Buckingham is aware of the records his team is creating. Speaking of the records, he said, “The records are not something that we have spoken or are a target for us. If you start looking at those things, then you start chasing them. It is not the records that we are chasing but the performances. We have so many measures which we use internally to measure our performance. And if we hit those measures more often than not and hold ourselves to the standards we have set, we have shown that results often come.”

When reminded of the unbeaten run, he added, “It (the unbeaten run) is always a nice thing for people to talk about, but for us, it’s not something that we talk about.”

The Men in Blue has been phenomenal, to say the least. With such a brilliant performance, the club has enthralled ISL fans and has immortalized Des Buckingham in the club’s history.

Chetan Sharma reveals shocking revelations about Indian cricket in a sting operation

Chairman of Selectors Chetan Sharma has made some shocking comments. The former cricketer was embroiled in a controversy after he made some shocking statements pertaining to the Indian team during a sting operation conducted by Zee News.

The sting operation saw Chetan Sharma comment on the Indian cricketer’s fitness and about the ego clash between the two heavyweights of Indian cricket- Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In the video, he was seen saying, “The players are not fit but they take injections to play. They are ready to play even at 80 percent fitness. They take injections and start playing.”

He further added, “Even if they are around 85 percent fit, they will say ‘Sir let us play’ but they are not cleared by the medical team that is where the problem lies. The players always want to play, they never refuse to play.”

According to Sharma, BCCI wasn’t happy with Virat as he had started to consider himself bigger than the game, and that’s why they were eager to remove him from the leadership role and took advantage of his rough patch in 2021 to replace him with Rohit Sharma, who as per Chetan wasn’t the preferred choice.

He stated, “Jab player thoda bada ho jaye to usko lagta hai ki vo bahut bada ho gaya, board se bhi bada ho gaya. Toh fir usko lagta hai ki mere ko toh koi kuch kar he nahi sakta. Mere bina to cricket band ho jayega India mein. Kabhi hua hai? Bade bade aaye, bade bade gaye, cricket to wahi ka wahi rehta hai. Toh vo usne uss samay hit maarne ki kosish kari president ko.”
