Women’s cricket has seen dramatic growth in recent years due to the popularity of T20, a short-format game known for its unpredictability and entertaining play. This format of the game has been featured in the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham and was also part of the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou alongside the men’s T20 tournament. 

Deepika Rasangika has set a remarkable record in women’s T20 cricket with her score of 150 runs in one inning. She is the first batter to ever achieve such a feat in an international women’s T20 match. With a total of only 120 balls per team, batters in this format of the game are always looking to hit big shots and clear the boundaries. 

Among member nations, India’s Harmanpreet Kaur has made her record for the highest score by an Indian in women’s T20 cricket. In 2018, she scored 103 off just 51 deliveries with seven fours and eight sixes against New Zealand in Providence, West Indies. Australia, the five-time winner of the Women’s T20 World Cup, has the most players in the top 10 list of individual top scorers.

1) Deepika Rasangika (Bahrain) 161* vs Saudi Arabia 

Deepika Rasangika set a new record in women’s cricket for her 161 not out off just 66 balls without hitting any sixes. This incredible inning helped Bahrain put up an impressive 318/1 in their 20 overs and also set a new record for the highest score by a team in women’s cricket. Bahrain went on to win the match against Saudi Arabia in the GCC Women’s Twenty20 Championship Cup 2021-22 in Oman by a whopping 269 runs after restricting their opponents to 49/8 in 20 overs. 

2) Esha Oza (UAE) 158* vs Bahrain 

Esha Oza scored an impressive unbeaten 158 runs against Bahrain, helping UAE to score 253 in 20 overs and bowling Bahrain out for only 43. She hit 22 fours and six sixes off 71 deliveries, showing that she had the potential to beat Deepika Rasangika’s record of 161 not out. 

3) Alyssa Healy (Australia) 148* vs Sri Lanka

Alyssa Healy, one of the best batters in Australia, recently scored an impressive unbeaten 148 runs against Sri Lanka in a three-match series in Sydney. She hit 19 fours and seven sixes off 61 deliveries, helping Australia to comfortably defeat Sri Lanka by 132 runs. Alyssa Healy’s incredible performance in the three-match series against Sri Lanka not only set a new record for the highest individual score in women’s T20 cricket of that time but also helped Australia to secure a comfortable victory. Her innings of 148 off 61 deliveries included 19 fours and seven sixes, showcasing her incredible batting skills and determination. 

4) Meg Lanning (Australia) 133* vs England 

After losing Alyssa Healy early in the match against England, Australia were in a spot of trouble. Thankfully, Captain Meg Lanning came to the rescue with an extraordinary unbeaten 133 off 63 deliveries. Her innings included 17 fours and seven sixes, helping Australia reach 226/3 in 20 overs and securing a 93-run victory. Meg Lanning’s heroic effort in the first match of the T20 series against England set a great example for her team. She showed tremendous skill and determination with her unbeaten 133. Her batting performance not only helped Australia win by 93 runs but also inspired her teammates to strive for better results.

5) Fatuma Kibasu (Tanzania) 127* vs Eswatini 

Fatuma Kibasu powered Tanzania to victory over Eswatini in the T20 World Cup 2021 qualifier from Africa. She opened the innings with an impressive unbeaten 127 off 66 balls, including 19 fours. Her incredible performance helped Tanzania to score 279/2 and defeat Eswatini by 256 runs. 6) Sterre Kalis (Netherlands) 126* vs Germany 

Sterre Kalis achieved an impressive unbeaten 126 runs against Germany in the T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier group stage. She faced 54 deliveries, hitting 19 fours and 3 sixes in her innings, leading the Netherlands to an 8-wicket victory. Her batting performance set up a great platform for the Netherlands to secure their spot in the tournament. 

Sterre Kalis’ incredible batting performance not only secured the Netherlands an 8-wicket victory over Germany but also secured her team a spot in the T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier tournament. Her batting performance helped Australia to a commanding victory over Ireland, leading them to the semi-finals of the tournament. Her performance not only secured Australia the victory but also their spot in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament.

Suzie Bates scored an extraordinary 124 against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2018 Qualifier group stages. Her innings included 11 fours and 8 sixes off just 61 deliveries, helping New Zealand to a comfortable 6-wicket victory. Her power-hitting and strategic placement of shots enabled her to reach her total in less than ten overs. This achievement cemented Suzie Bates’ reputation as one of the best batters in women’s cricket. Her remarkable performance was further proof of her incredible talent and skill as a batter, and it has inspired many other players to strive for excellence in their own game. 

After her record-breaking score of 124, Suzie Bates said she was very proud to have achieved such a feat and that it was a special moment for her. It was incredible to see Danni Wyatt score 124 runs in India’s backyard, as she hit Indian bowlers all around the ground and looked capable of chasing down any target. The conditions were perfect for batting, with the wicket being very good and the outfield fast, allowing her to have an astonishing strike rate of 200 and a run rate of over 10 while trying to reach the target of almost 200 runs. 

Danni Wyatt was in remarkable form during her match against India, having shared a 61-run opening stand (in 5.2 overs) with Bryony Smith and then a 96-run partnership with Tammy Beaumont on the second wicket. She scored fifty runs in 24 balls and went on to hit 15 boundaries and five sixes in her 64-ball 124. Her fantastic batting was only made possible due to an ideal wicket and perfect boundaries, allowing her to achieve a team fifty in 4.4 overs, 67 runs in the Powerplay, and the hundred mark in 9.2 overs. 

While talking about her performance, Danni Wyatt said, “This hundred was quite special because my dad has flown all the way to see my knock. I’ve worked hard with my coaches. Fitness was a big factor, kept pushing myself. I would like to try and keep going from here”. 

Heather Knight also appreciated the special knock by Danni Wyatt. “I’m lost for words (about Wyatt’s century). Brilliant wicket to bat. I think the hard work we put in the last few months has paid off. Very pleasing with the win. She (Wyatt) played smart cricket and was very pleased with her. We bowled well in spells and we were confident in chasing the target.” said Danni Wyatt. 

10) Beth Mooney (Australia) 117* vs England

Beth Mooney, the Australian opener, had a remarkable performance against England in the first T20I in 2017 as she scored an unbeaten 117 runs off 70 balls, making it only the second century for Australia in T20 Internationals. Her destructive innings included 19 fours and 1 six. However, Australia went on to lose the match as England grabbed a four-wicket win with 6 balls remaining in the match. 

11) Shandre Fritz (South Africa) 116* vs Netherlands 

Shandre Fritz became the first South African woman to score a century in a Twenty20 Internationals when she scored 116* against the Netherlands at the 2010 ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge.

Ranking all the teams from the Women’s Premier League

We witnessed how many Women’s cricketers garnered significant sums from teams during the recently concluded Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction as a result of their spotless records and dazzling numbers. A few celebrities who made news after becoming some of the most expensive purchases at the event were Smriti Mandhana, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Ashleigh Gardner, Deepti Sharma, and Shafali Verma. Their input will be essential in determining the success of their respective franchises in the forthcoming competition. 

In the historic first Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on February 13, INR 59.50 crore was spent on 87 players, 30 of whom are international stars. The performances of the international players will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining the fate of the teams come March. Only 87 of the 449 players featured in the WPL 2023 auction could secure contracts. Some well-known performers from the global stage went unsold from the auction’s focus from either of the franchises. 

The first season of Women’s Premier League is set to begin on 4th March, and the finals of the tournament will be played on 26th March. Before the tournament proceeds, let’s have a look at the best teams in the grand Indian tournament.

Royal Challengers Bangalore 

RCB bought a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.9 crores. RCB enjoys constructing its brand around famous players. Imagine the men’s team as having Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli. Similar to the Women’s Premier League(WPL), they have set up a formidable trio consisting of Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, a four-time winner of the T20 World Cup, and Dane van Niekerk of South Africa. 

Apart from some of the renowned Indian superstars, RCB has managed to gather a talented bunch of international all-rounders. The team’s coach and management have the difficult task of deciding which cricketers to leave out of their far-reaching and talented squad, featuring renowned players such as Perry, Sophie Devine, van Niekerk, and Heather Knight, who all possess both batting and bowling capabilities. 

Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, and Renuka Singh add even more firepower to the already impressive overseas contingent of top-class cricketers. This set of players automatically makes RCB one of the top favorites to win the Indian T20 League. However, the lack of a quality Indian wrist-spinner on the bouncy Mumbai pitches might be a drawback.

A chance to play for the MI-based franchise will be especially poignant for Harmanpreet Kaur, who made her debut on the Mumbai pitches in 2013 with a memorable century in the Women’s World Cup. This return to the city will mark the start of an exciting new phase of Indian women’s cricket, during which Harmanpreet could potentially lead the Mumbai Indians. Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Pooja Vastrakar are sure to appear at the top of the team’s lineup. Both Sciver-Brunt and Vastrakar are essential cogs because of their mobility in the field against speed and spin, as well as their superb medium pace and ability to bowl a heavy ball in the middle overs. 

Mumbai Indians have gone the extra mile in gathering a large selection of reserve players thanks to their dedicated scouting system. Additionally, they have also developed a robust pool of India Under-19 players and will use this time to help them grow and develop over the years. Mumbai Indians are known for creating superstars like the franchise previously did with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. With Yastika Bhatia as the sole wicketkeeper, Mumbai Indians lack backup options in that area. They could also use more Indian seam bowlers, as Vastrakar is their only option in this regard.

The Capitals’ top order is composed of Shafali, Rodrigues, and Lanning. Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning makes the team look invincible on paper. 

Delhi Capitals have a strong bowling troupe consisting of Poonam Yadav, Jess Jonassen, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Arundhati Reddy, and Marizanne Kapp. With Taniya Bhatia and Aparna Mondal as wicketkeepers, however, the lower-middle order might be hindered due to their lack of striking ability.

GG amassed a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.5 crores. Gujarat Giants made Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner one of the most expensive overseas purchases in the auction at INR 3.2 crore (USD 390,000 approx). Ashleigh Gardner recently achieved her best-ever bowling figures in T20Is. Gardner mentioned that the conditions at DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium are perfect for good strokeplay, which will benefit her as a hitter and also help the ball grip and turn. Her performance with both bat and ball is expected to make a significant impact. 

With her abundance of experience in the domestic circuit, Sneh Rana could be a huge asset for Mumbai Indians during the Women’s Premier League. Additionally, she will be reuniting with Nooshin Al Khadeer, her former Railways coach, who has had a major impact on Rana’s return to the national side. Her flight and dip with the ball could be strategic tools for the two venues hosting all 22 games. 

Gujarat Giants have some of the most specialized overseas options available to them, in addition to reliable all-rounders Deandra Dottin and Annabel Sutherland, who both specialize in seam bowling. Gujarat Giants are lacking a bit in the local Indian experience department, with Harleen Deol, S Meghana, and D Hemalatha being their only Indian batters who can be trusted in critical moments or if any unexpected injuries arise.

Along with Deepti, Devika Vaidya, Parshavi Chopra, Grace Harris, and Tahlia McGrath, who can all provide an impact with both the bat and ball, the team has the potential to shift momentum and take the game in their favor.

Deepti Sharma is a key player in the line-up, especially in spin-friendly pitch conditions in Mumbai. Sharma was India’s second-most expensive player in the WPL 2023 auction with an INR 2.6 crore price tag, behind Smriti Mandhana. Sharma’s ability to produce results with both batting and bowling makes her a vital part of the team. Alyssa Healy is an essential part of the Warriorz top lineup and team, offering plenty of international experience. She has a remarkable ability to turn the tides in her team’s favor, with an impressive batting average of 128.26 in T20Is. 

Warriorz has an excellent core spin trio with Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Sophie Ecclestone, and Deepti at the helm. With Shabnim Ismail and Anjali Sarvani providing quality support in the pace department, Healy, the Under-19 India opener Shweta Sehrawat, and McGrath form a solid top order. Having said that, Kiran Navgire and the lesser-known Laxmi Yadav are the only dedicated batters in the middle order; Warriorz needs players who can take on an anchor role if a few quick wickets fall early in innings.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is underway. From thrilling chases to memorable bowling spells, the Women’s T20 World Cup has had enough to satiate every sportsperson’s hunger.

There are a lot of expectations from Women in Blue. After having come close to lifting the most prestigious trophy in the sport twice in the past, Team India will be hoping to end their wait for a maiden World Cup triumph. 

The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup ticks all the boxes. From having a blockbuster opening pair of Smriti Mandhana & Shafali Verma to one of the best contenders for the best-emerging talent in Richa Ghosh to having a charismatic skipper in Harmanpreet Kaur, the current squad looks set to achieve the glory. After Australia and England, India is the favourite to lift the trophy.

With the tournament moving towards its knockout stage, we take a look at some of the unforgettable moments from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. 

Ellyse Perry’s right foot wins Australia the 2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final

The 2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final saw one of the most thrilling grand finales of a cricket tournament. The Invincible Australian side faced the New Zealanders at Barbados’ Kensington Oval.

Batting first, Australia had a disastrous start, with half the side dismissed for just 50 runs. However, some gritty batting from their lower order helped the team manage 106 runs in their full quota of 20 overs.

Now, defending such a small total would be a monumental task. But the Aussies were up for the task. With some intelligent bowling and excellent fielding, the Australians kept taking regular wickets and kept the run rate in check. 

With 14 runs needed off the final over, the Australian skipper Alex Blackwell backed Ellyse Perry to bowl the final over. The first four deliveries went for seven runs leaving the equation as seven additional runs needed in the final two deliveries. The fifth ball went for another two runs, with the New Zealanders needing five runs off the last ball.

Powerful New Zealand batter Sophie Devine was on strike for the last ball and was looking to find a boundary to level the scores. However, Ellyse Perry had other plans. Perry bowled a yorker which Devine hit straight. Perry showed her presence of mind by using her boot to stop the ball and win the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup trophy for her team.

Windies Women’s title-clinching victory against Australia in 2016

The year 2016 was memorable for the West Indies. The Caribbean teams managed to win multiple prestigious tournaments. After clinching the under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, the women’s team went one step ahead and won the Senior Women’s T20 World Cup. 

The final, being played at Eden Gardens, saw two powerhouses of cricket go against each other. Batting first, the Australians made 148/5 with half-centuries from Elyse Villani and Meg Lanning. 

West Indies prevail in final over thriller

Although not a huge target, the Australians felt it was a competitive total. The chase began, and Windies women thrashed every plan made by the Australian team. The openers, Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor, put on a show for the Kolkata audience with an opening partnership of 120 runs in just 15 overs. Needing just 28 runs in the last five overs, the Windies lost both their well-settled batters, and it was left to their new batters to take the team home.

With 13 runs needed from the last two overs, Deandra Dottin and Britney Cooper managed to keep calm and win their team’s first ICC trophy.

P.S. Also, on that day, the men’s team defeated England to defend their ICC T20 World Cup trophy.

Heather Knight’s iconic innings in the 2020 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup

England skipper Heather Knight showed her class at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. During their group-stage match against Thailand, the cricketer scored an unbeaten 108* from just 66 deliveries, and her efforts ensured England cruised home to victory at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The batter had 13 boundaries, and four strikes crossed the boundary line.

However, one such prize turned out to be a rice cooker. Morgan assumed the stove was being used as a metaphor for his terrific knock “under pressure,” which made the situation rather comical. But it turned out that one of the sponsors was the rice cooker brand. 

Milk and rosewater 

Indianapolis 500 victors are given a milk bottle, which they will gulp from and then pour over their heads (they even have to specify their milk preference before racing). Alcohol use is not unlawful in Bahrain, although it is not permitted outside. Therefore, Waard, a non-alcoholic rosewater beverage, is used in place of the customary victory spray at Formula 1 races. 

A gigantic credit card 

We have no doubt that the Kaiser Chiefs midfielder enjoyed the 2,000 South African Rand that he received from sponsors ABSA bank in April 2014 as a Man of the Match award, but we’re still not sure why the novelty credit card he was given had to be quite so big. This item would have been difficult to transport home, and using contactless payment would require at least two people to operate. 

Flip Flops 

A prize is a prize, but we don’t think a pair of flip-flops should ever be given out as the Man of the Match award except for the final match before the summer break. However, Ghanaian Premier League team Dreams FC decided to frequently award pairs of the infamously fragile shoes as a reward for exceptional performances via their sponsors. They don’t appear top of the line from the picture below, and the receiver appears more interested in being somewhere else than at the presentation.

A Burger King paper crown 

Undoubtedly the least expensive item on this list, Franco Armani of Argentina received a paper crown from one of the fast food moguls following his outstanding River Plate performance against Danubio in March 2018. Armani was forced to give his post-game interview while wearing the crown due to sponsorship obligations, making him appear silly. 

Sunshine snacks in CPL 

One of the top T20 cricket competitions is the Caribbean Premier League. Since several T20 franchises worldwide had Caribbean cricketers as their main attraction, the West Indies Cricket Board decided to launch its own T20 League. Sunshine Snacks is one of the tournament’s many notable sponsors. Customers of the food companies receive nuts and chips, and they also follow this strategy with Man of the Matches. The sponsor gave players of the match award winners a snack basket, which was hilarious because the players couldn’t eat greasy snacks given the current fitness standards of the sport. 

Bananas

Gareth Bale

Jones explained: “The fixtures list United on the left side when we’re at home and on the right when we’re away. So this weekend, I’ll put my right sock on first because it will be Swansea v United.” “Next week, if I play against Benfica at Old Trafford, I’ll put my left sock on.” 

He added: “I also don’t like stepping on white lines on the pitch. When I cross a white line, I’ll take the first step with the foot that corresponds to whether we’re home or away.” 

Jamie Vardy 

Jamie Vardy’s superstitious ritual prior to every Leicester City Premier League game during their successful 2015-2016 season was quite unique – he would drink half a bottle of port and then gulp three cans of Red Bull in one go the day before a match. It looks like this truly gave him the wings he needed to soar to success! 

Cesc Fabregas 

Cesc Fabregas had a curious pre-game ritual involving his wife, Daniella Semaan. India would like to forget a test but will not be able to do so for two reasons. First, in the second innings, they scored 36, the lowest Test score in history.
